Single Malt suggestions

I would start with some thing a little lighter than the Black, for a great starter would be "Dewers White Lable " , I drink it a lot when there is no single malt to sip, it is not as full body as the reserve & under 25 bucks a bottle , Haig & Haig , Pinch bottle is a good sipping blend also but a little more $$ about 30 bucks a bottle, Both are great to sip neet or with a splash of water , & if you must you can add a little ice , I like mine in a snifter, no ice & just a small splash of water , if I pour out 2 ounces of whisky I add one ounce of water or less. to start with a single malt I would look for Speyburn, a GREAT tasteing 10YO single malt & it is less $$$ than the Dewers , just about 20/22 bucks a bottle & a really good scotch IMHO. I keep a bottle of it to sip at the shop, I hate to give the moochers my Glenfarclass barrel proof or the A'Brunda at 60 bucks a bottle for them to shot it down like it was Corbys or Shenley , right now I am enjoying a Laugavulin 16YO single malt neet in a snifter , MOTHERS MILK !!!! , if you dont mind spending the money OBAN is a wonderful light single malt but it is pricy @60 bucks a bottle but a wonderful starting point for the better single malts , dammm I could go on for hours with pairings of scotch & cigars but you asked, so I answered , sorry to be so long winded , talking about fine whisky is a "thing" I love to do , like eating sleeping & breathing ! hahaha
Enjoy, Vince

I started out with Johnny Walker Black and Red. I also like a little bit of Jameson's Whiskey once in a while (especially with a full-bodied cigar). I'd like to get more into single malts though.

for the singles malts I love the OBAN for a starter, , IMHO it is the lightest of the single malts ( that I have drank so far ) , & if you DONT like the smokey Peetey Idoine taste & a brineney taste , stay away from Laphroiag, it is the Highest in smoke of all the whiskys I have samples so far , all of the Islay whiskys are in the smokey arena , ( the whiskys are divided by regions, Highlands , Lowlands , Campbell town & Islay ,all are different, all make some great whiskys ,, My favorite at the moment is an Islay called Laugavulin 16 YO , fallowed by Abalor A'Brunda cask strenght & my go to daily dram is Spayburn, 10YO . , Good luck finding your favorite , it has taken me a lifetime of tasting & I still havent got to them all, BUT it is fun trying !! Enjoy, Vince

Agreat starter single malt is Balvinnie 10. Great scotch. Not too much to frighten of newbies. Love the carmel undertone. Yummy.

Had my first chance to try a wee dram of the single malt last night.
Was at a "fine dining establishment" that has a "list" with 12 entries. Based on Vince's recommendation I sampled the Oban.

Then I had one in Vince's honor--in their cigar bar with an Ashton ESG!

Pulled the cork on a bottle of this last night. I was pleasantly surprised!

Glad you liked it , I started a bottle of OLD PULTENEY, this verry afternoon, wow what a wonderful dram , for the price, almost as good as Laugavulin but half the price ! stop over for a sip & a cigar anytime, the Qtr.Deck is open , Steve was at the shop in Monaca a few times , we need to get you there on a Friday night for some cigar smoke & some scotch ! Enjoy, Vince

I was just thinking about your shop today - where is it exactly and when is a good time to stop up?

1106 Penna Ave ( the main street In Monaca ) , I am there weekdays 1:30 to 5 & Friday till 9 Pm , for the BYOB , I try not to be there on the weekends , unless there is a problem, I get to much time now , looking for some one to work evenings , Who WILL SHOW up & not be short in the cash regester, the last one was always late & the money was always short, , can you say FIRED ! , well if you know anyone give them a heads up. clean a few ashtrys, drink a little coffee & some single malt, smoke a fine cigar when ever you want listen to some jazz or watch a little bit of the TV, ( I never turn the dammm thing on my self) unless its the food network hahaha ! give me a call 724-774-5166 at the shop, good times are rolling all the time , Enjoy, Vince

Glenlivet 12 has been my go-to scotch but I want something with more meat on its bones. While I'd love to get the Macallan 12 (which I tried recently and loved) I'd really like to go cheaper (when you're freelance and in between contracts, you gotta scrimp) and keep it closer to $30.

I just picked up a bottle of Bowmore Legend. SKAL!

I just pulled the cork on a bottle of OLD PULTENEY, nice & smokey, a lot lot Laugavulin but half the price , my new go to single malt, not that it will replace the Spayburn (about 20/22 a bottle )but a fine tasting dram about 30/35 bucks. Enjoy, Vince

I just popped a bottle of Lismore that cost me about $21. Really nice stuff, regardless of the price. Very chewy, with an earth and caramel vibe, that leans on the heavy side. An ice cube, (or presumably a touch of water) opens it right up. Makes you want a nice big slug instead of a gentle sip.

Great link , I havent had the chance to find this whisky but I will be looking for it , glad to hear you liked it , Now I want to try it !! Enjoy, Vince

I bought a bottle of Dalmore 12($30.00) last week- smoky with a long finish. I was used to Glenlivet 12(very smooth) and I did not like the first shot of Dalmore, but it grew on me rapidly. :)

Yeah, Glenlivet is really light and easy drinkin'. Everything else seems heavy and strange if that's what you're used too. Good stuff, don't get me wrong, but sometimes you want a drink with some meat on its bones.

I have never liked Glenlivet 12 - any of their 20+ year old scotches are excellent, but something about their 12 just never tasted right. If I'm going to spend the money, I'll spend an extra 5 bucks for the Macallan 12, or the Glenmorangie 12 year Maderia or Port aged.
