Slippery Slopes: wet shaving

DE is double edged. The cool thing Matt, is that they are so inexpensive! I just picked up a 1965 Gillette on Ebay for $9.00!!! I won a second one but I had to pay around $20 for it.

Oh yeah, the Mantic videos are awesome!

Today I received a 1965 Gillette Super Speed from an Ebay auction that I won. It is beautiful! I paid $7 dollars for it! Wo0t! I can hardly wait until tomorrow morning to give it a go!

It may be too late already ... hope not.

Hope you have had time to calm down a wee bit . . .

before approaching your throat with a straight razor!

BEWARE: DO NOT LET CHRIS MULALLY BE AN INFLUENCE ON YOU!

LOLOL

I just ordered some shaving supplies. I have a nice custom shave scuttle with my initials coming as well as a new brush, cream and alum block. http://www.dirtybirdpottery.com is where the scuttle is coming from. A work of art.

DL

How is it my fault that you are weak Minded?

You will love that scuttle.

Cheryl and i are going to antique stores on Saturday to see if we can find some DE's.

Today was very fruitful! I bought 4 DE's today and the kicker is this: I found what amounts to a brand new in the case gillette Fat Boy adjustable and paid $2.50 for it!!!! Two of the others were not in good shape so I combined the best head with the best handle and came up with a good razor after some polish and cleaning.

Actually, since I stopped racing, I don't shave my legs any more.

What kind of shaving cream or soap do you guys like. I still can not find one I like and I have tried many.

alright guys...
i think im gunna slowly transition to wet shaving.

heres what got me...
in the youtube link and channel linked to above they showed a picture and gave an explanation on "razor burn" and how its caused.

i have very sensitive skin. it makes sense. I ALREADY spend about 20 min prepping to shave. If i dont, my face looks like a 14 year old that eats nothing but chips and chocolate. I see wet shaving probably as more of a requirement than all of you.

here is my plan:
I have a few mach3 turbo heads left. I will use those till i run out and can get vintage style safety razor.
Im almost 100% sure that this weekend i will go out and attempt to find a brush and some soaps and an aftershave.

and a few years down the line, if i have the stones to do so, i will go to a single edge strait razor. I fear that my had will not be steady enough to not cut my face off.

...and that could hurt.

any tips before i dive in?

Great, Kuzi!!

You will find that wet shaving is not very expensive. I have been buying vintage Gillettes for well under $10 each. You can buy a 100 pack of blades for about 15 dollars. A blade lasts me about 3-5 days depending on the brand. People recommend getting a blade sampler pack to find the one that works for you. Soaps can be bought for about $5 a puck.

The first thing I did was buy and read this book: http://www.buy.com/prod/leisureguy-s-gu ... 78301.html

I have been using the pointers in this book with great results. I'll admit that I had terrible razor burn the first two weeks but I have changed my technique and am now having zero razor burn.

Prior to wet shaving, I hated the thought of having to shave and would only put myself thru the hell only every other day. Now I am shaving every morning and loving every moment of it. My shaves are enjoyable and i am getting the closest, most comfortable shaves of my life.

I am happy to hear that you are interested in wet shaving. So many people believe it is more trouble than it is worth, but what a way to start off your day! Its great!

BTW, don't get a Walmart brush. Chris may recommend one (he loves them), but they are pieces of crap.

I was like you Kuzi, I had HORRIBLE razor burn. I hated to shave. Now smooth sailing. One thing I would recommend is not doing the Against the grain pass. you will not be baby but smooth but nobody will ever notice. For me it causes to much irritation.

As for equipment. here is were it gets tricky. the old adage you get what you pay for does and does not apply.

Brushes.. I think this is the most important part that you could buy. Don't buy the wal-mart williams brush. it is just Piece of crap no matter what Dustin says. If you are looking to do it on the cheap go with something like this Brush If you want to spend a little more and get an awesome brush I would do this Another brush I love his brush that I bought from him

Razor. Go the Ebay route, or antique. they are so easy to sanitize that it is no big deal. I like to use a 60's era Gillete Supper Speed.

Soap VS cream. Try em both. there are so many different choices. I like Taylor of Bond street cream. But I have used Mama bear soaps and love them as well.

Blades. got to get the sampler for here Westcost Shaving

Also Check out Badger and Blade dot Com.

It is a shaving forum and there is SOOOOOOOOOOOO much information there.

Another one bites the dust!!!

Like Chris said do not skimp on the brush. A good brush is key to wet shaving. Tha AOS Lavander is great for sensitive skin, they also have the lavander pre shave oil and aftershave balm in the same scent.

Craig, I bought a Rooney 3/1. Unfortunately, I can't have it until my birthday :( .

Went antique shopping again this weekend and scored 4 more DEs. Average price for each one was about 5 dollars.

Damn man, how many razors do you have now? I have 2. 3 brushes, and an enourmous amount of creams and soaps.
Last night I was apparently using a dull blade and gashed my chin :(

12 vintage gillettes.

2 fatboys
1 slim
1 super speed
3 travel
5 three piece.

I want a gold aristocrat then I am finished with Gillettes unless I can find some adjustables to sell on Ebay.

I will eventually pick up a few Merkurs then I am finished buying DEs.

I don't have that many refills for may razor!

Step one is admitting that you have a problem!
