Thompson Cigar?

OK, guys..let me just clarify something here...lol... I am content at this point to do my shopping at my local smoke shop and with c.com. The only reason I asked was for the "coupon" my fiance found, and was wanting to get for me. I set her straight on THAT issue :p Anyway, thanks for your input, but i am not looking for a new place to shop for NCs :) (not that i am opposed to a great deal that may come along  )

Smoke Well,

I've been to one of the JRs in NC. It's huge and filled with junk but they do have a hayuge walk-in humidor with a ton of cigars.

Where is there a JR in the DC area??

The NC humidor is incredible. My partner and I sat at their bar and enjoyed a GREAT cup of coffee while enjoying 2 Trinidad Mini-Belicoso's.

Really really nice walk-in (saying that really dimishes the sheer size and scope of it. It's actually the size of a restaurant.)

I have a JR's not too far from me, maybe 10 miles. I think I might have to take a trip out there.

I wrote up a spreadsheet comparing a random (ok, not quite random- they came out of the T******* catalog) assortment of 18 cigars at 12 different cigar sites. It shows who had the highest percentage of the smokes, who charged the least for each, the percentage over the best deal for each, and the average percentage over best deal for each site. Atlantic Cigars came out on top, with the most best deals and the lowest average % over best deal. Though they didn't top the variety chart, they were within reasonable distance. Thompson came in dead last. They didn't have a single best deal, and their average over best deal was 50%! They had 2-3 sticks that were ~100% over best deal.

After I went to all this trouble, I found a TERRIFIC site that does all of this and more. Cigarcyclopedia.com does what I did with more sites and more cigars (They agreed with me on best site!) They also have a database of all the magazine published reviews from the last 12 years, in both the US and Europe. It gets around legal issues by not identifying who gave what review, and just presenting average review and high review info. It has links to good buys and cigar news. It (perhaps most usefully) has a huge page comparing prices on most cigars you can think of at the top ranked sites. This page gave me the lowest price I could find anywhere in almost every case. This has got to be the one greatest site anywhere.

I have never heard of the place. Good thing huh? I can't see any reason to leave Cigar.com. Great deals, super quality, easy ordering......geeezzz I know a great thing when I find it.  8)

I am with you, I do shop aroun but I keep coming back to C.Com I like the selection and the help that I have gotten here.

I totally respect coming back to a place that gives you the service you look for. I guess I haven't used them enough yet for them to totally win me over. Based on the recs here I will definitely be ordering a couple of sampler packs at least. On the other hand, on my little survey, c.com scored an average of almost 40% over "best deal." If anyone is interested, I'll post the sheet.

Just want to make clear that my posts about alternate sites mean no disrespect to cigar.com or any of the fans here. I really have to give props to this board, which I guess is here because of the people at cigar.com. This operation and the people here are first class.

Did somebody around here say the "T word?"

Okay, like many others, I'll admit I got started with them, but seriously, a box of cigars for $85 that I can get for $58 somewhere else? Or a box of cigars for $225 that I can get somewhere else for $140? They do have occasionally good humidor deals, but seriously, once you learn a thing or two, . . .

the "T word?"

He said the T word. Burn him! burn him! He's a witch, burn him!

He turned me into a newt.

I think most of us have bit the Thompson's sales bait once in our life. Heck even I did it. Actually, got the humi-cigar bundle package. Tossed the cigars after lighting one up. YUCK! The humi is the only thing worth its cost.

Hey man, the T******** catalog makes great reading on the hopper!

Glad I found this place before trying them, but it is fun to read how every one of their offerings scored a 90+. . . .by T******** customers!

I started ordering with Thompstalk-you-son. They charge you without you knowing about it and you cannot get away from them. Took them a week and a half to credit my card back.

It's amazing. I left "the 'T' word" on May 1, 1999, after a VERY unsatisfactory conclusion to a problem. I'm still hearing the same menu of dissatisfactions to THIS day that I've been hearing forever. Some people never learn. That goes for the heads of businesses, and the people that continue to shop there, when there are so many other BETTER and CHEAPER avenues to pursue. :dunno: :duh:

Like Cigar.com.

It is possible for new people to get screwed by T******** simply because they want to try things and stumble across them before stumbling on any forums.

Absolutely. That's what they depend on, that people just won't know where else to go, because "the 'T' word" is so visible. That's why many years ago, when I wanted a bottle of expensive perfume for a girl, I went to Macy's. I knew, and had heard, that there must be better prices on certain big name perfumes out there, but I went to Macy's because that's what I knew, and all I knew. Thanks to the internet though, hermits, recluses, all kinds of folks like me can find out what we need to know, and do our thing while staying alone and indoors.

When it comes to the internet, all you have to do is think of what you are looking for, or what you want to know, and type those words in a search engine. It's that simple. Want hot sauce, mustard, cigars, bourbon, single malts, how to make steel, how big are the world's largest land vehicle tires, a recipe for chicken cacciatore, it's all there. No more excuses. If you have a computer, no more "T word." :cryinlaugh: :cryinlaugh: :cryinlaugh: :flush:
