Memoir of a Novice

OK, so I have a small cooler already. Can I get by using the "gel pillows" used in shipping my cigars here? I just need to keep them properly until my Humi arrives.

You would need an awful lot of those I believe to humidify even a small cooler. Boveda packs would be better. They are essentially the same idea but are more efficient and last longer. If you have a local shop they might have them. The ratio is one pack to every 50 cigars plus one pack. So if your cooler holds 150 cigars you would need 4 packs.

heheheh, i used to humidify my coolerdor with those little packs from single orders from cigar.com, just a plastic bag with like 20 of those pillows in it. worked too good, had to close the bag a ways to control the humidity.

OOHHH! Mr. Postman left me a package today....from cigar.com!
I have to say that was fast service. Ordered the sampler late on Wed. last week, and it came in today. (on saver shipping) And what good timing... Smoked my last stick last night.

I had a Don Diego Robusto. It was an easy smoke, but then I have not had what I would call a bad cigar yet. I of course can not detect any kind of significant differences yet, but then all I have smoked have been very mild ones. I am looking forward to trying some more flavorful cigars to have something to compair to. I am hoping that this sampler will be just the ticket. (They also came packed in a nice wooden box.)

On that note, my Humidor still has not come in, and looks to be at least another two weeks  I have a small, lunchbox type cooler that I guess I can use untill it arrives, but all I have for humidification are three of the pillow packs that are used in shipping. (and of course, no hygrometer) quite the predicament I have here. Unfortunately my "local" cigar shop is about a 75 minute drive. Guess I know where I will be going on my next day off!

ok, got out my cooler... the box that the sampler came in will not fit in my cooler. My question is: should I put the pillows in the wooden box, or take the cigars out of the box and use the cooler? (or maybe skip them both and put in a ziplock bag?)

MAN! I wish that Humi would get here :banghead:

What I would do is get a ziplock bag large enough to store your cigars and the water pillow in the same bag without them touching each other and just set it aside until your humi gets there.

OK, I couldn't stand it any longer!! My humi is going to be while getting here, and I can already see that it is going to be WAY too small for my needs wants. So I orded an Oasis XL today. Going to pick up a cooler and look for a battery operated fan tomorrow! I Am not ready to commit to a whole box of any particular cigar yet.... But it is comming! I will post my end result when I get the chance. And HEY! no making fun of my wee little stash!

p.s. someone posted a link for a site to order cedar shelves/trays a while back. I can't remember who, or in which thread, but if someone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Oh good, he is finally one of us!! It took al little longer this time, he must be strong in the force!!!

Don't worry Spider I have not forgotten you, I have just been very very busy this week. I think I should get it off tomorrow. I found a coupon for CI, and I am throwing that in there for you too.

Enjoy the Madness!!

No worries, bikeman. At least this way I should have my coolerdor up and running..... Oasis is due in on Friday!!! Picked up my cooler this evening after work and am anxious to get her runnin' The coupon will be great! My Fiance is actually from the Easton, PA area, so I can give it to her so she can get something for me! lol.... coupon, shopping....should work :bolt:

Ha! Already a coolerdor owner. I say you get a big cooler now and use the backordered ones for your "non cellophaned" cigars because soon enough you'll be getting those too.

Just finished a Romeo y Julieta 1875, Robusto (Bully). Nice easy draw, with lots of white smoke. It was the most even (evenest?) burn as of yet, though I do not know if I can attribute this to the cigar, or that i am finally getting the hang of lighting properly. I let the 2 inch ash fall naturally... and NATURALLY, it fell in my lap.
Not a strong cigar, pobably medium, but more flavorful than what I have been smoking so far. The Camaroon wraper left a pleasant tast on my lips, yet the aftertaste (finish?) was not lingering. Too soon for me to be naming favorites, but this was a very nice smoke, and the extra flavor was a welcome and pleasant experience.

LOL. That's exactly what I'm doing.

At Quag's suggestion in another thread, I picked up an Oust fan today for my coolerdor. I also cut some lengths of dowl rod to use as shelf supports, my cooler has slots in the sides for deviders. The dowl fit in these slots nicely. Got some distilled water, and am waiting for the Oasis to get in on Friday. How long will the Oasis run on the battery? I am thinking of cutting and splicing the cord inorder to run it out through the drain plug of the cooler. After that a little silicone should seal it back up well enough. Or maybe a cork, so it can easily be removed...

The Oasis has a paper thin cord you can thread under the lid. What was this about an Oust fan? Can you run it on batteries? Please explain.

It was suggested that on a coolerdor, especially if you have several boxes or levels of shelves, that another fan would help to keep the RH consistant thoughout the cooler. The oust fan can be bought at most any grocer(or WAl~Mart) for around $5. It runs on a "D" battery (included) and runs for 5 minutes on 15 minute intervals for the duration of the battery. (don't put the fragrance cartidge in it of course) look for it in the air freshener isle. hope this was of help.

how long does it run on the battery? it would have to be a couple months to be worth it.
