Newbie

Hey all, I am new here to cigar.com and cigar smoking in general. It is something I have just become quite interested in and am amazed to see the amount of information needed to fully appreciate the experience. Any help you all can give me from etiquite to good cigars to start with would be great. Thanks everyone.

welcome, Cory! I am new also, but these people can help you with anything you need to know. I have been posting my "newbie" experiences in the thread, "memoir of a novice" many of our members have been answering my questions there. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask, and post often!

Welcome, Cory. I just started smoking cigars in September. I like to keep a cigar journal. Of course, the folks on this forum are a tremendous help. I like to smoke robustos and smoke them often. Try all types of premium cigars from all countries. I find that reading magazines, books and getting info online is the best thing for me. So many cigars, so little time. Samplers are a great way to start.

Cory - please remember that following proper form is a MUST in cigar communities.
That being said, please send me a sampler pack including an Opus, couple of Montes, a Graycliffe or two, some Hemmingways, and I'll let the rest of the crew know wether or not you passed your audition. You can PM me for my address. Thank you.

:D :D :D

Welcome!

About a month ago I suddenly got back into cigars. I've always liked them, but haven't smoked many since college (I'm 29 now)- until recently.
Shortly before Christmas the thought of getting a couple cigars to smoke w/ my sister-in-law's dad hit me, so I dropped by the local smoke shop. Thier place is right on I-90 between my place (in Chicago) and my parent's home in MN, so I often drop by if I drive.

At any rate, now I've got 2 humidors and about 40 sticks sitting around. The two humidors wasn't really intentional. I bought one which didn't work right and lost the reciept. Or at least it didn't work right with jars of gel for humidification. So I bought another one. The second one was too wet- ended up at 75%+ in rather short order. So I had one too wet and one too dry. Then I swapped the humidification equipment, and now the first one hangs out at 70% or a touch over and the second one seems to like 66-68. Now I have extra space, which means I obviously need more cigars.

So far I think I'm a maduro fan, but I've got a lot of things to try. Here's my list of recent smokes (off the top of my head):
Flor de Oliva Maduro churchill
Flor de Oliva 10th Aniversary churchill
Flor de Oliva Corojo churchill
Oliva "O" Maduro churchill
Ghurka Legend Beast
Partagas Black Label
Camacho Corojo
Camacho Corojo Ltd. Diploma Maduro
Excalibur 1066
Perdomo Cameroon
Perdomo Cuban Cafe Torpedo
Perdomo Maduro
Punch Deluxe
Punch (robusto?)
Zino Platinum Shorty
CAO MX2 robusto
CAO Brazillia Anaconda
La Gloria Cubana R #7
Acid One
Acid Ordinary Larry
Acid Cold Tea Infusion

Of those, I think the best ones were the Ghurka Beast, CAO Brazillia, La Gloria Cubana R7, and the MX2s.
Figure in price, and the Flor de Oliva Maduro & 10th Aniversary are tops. I'm thinking about buying a bundle and a box as "everyday" smokes. Ignoring price I liked the R7 and Anaconda the best.

Also, the Acid Cold Tea Infusion was the #3 most disgusting thing I've ever smoked, after a Garcia y Vega and a Phillys Blunt. I'm sure it was worse than the "tropical plant" a couple of my friends tried smoking back in college. No, not pot or some other contraband. Just a random decorative plant. They smoked it as a joke, but I didn't observe any expressions or comments indicating it was foul.

I might as well toss in a little background-
I'm a 29yo guy living in Chicago in one of the "cool" city neighborhoods. Professionally I'm a "computer geek". aka computer programmer. I'm also a bit of a snob- but only where "consumables" are concerned. Folders, Lipton, Anheiser-Busch, and Miller are on my crap list. Fresh roasted premium coffee, whole leaf rolled tea, and beer with a good strong flavor is where it's at IMHO. I get most of my coffee from Intelligentsia (http://www.intelligentsiacoffee.com/), a local company that sells fresh roasted coffee, and most of my tea from http://www.adagio.com.
I'm also a bit of a chef, though a lot of folks (like my mom) make me look like a wannabe. I think I might be able to beat her at experimental cooking though. :) Aside from the food, beverages, smokes, and computer stuff I'm also into sailing, ceramics, computer games (particularly strategy- Hearts of Iron 2 is my fav) and, being single, chasing women. lol.
