Sunday Morning Smoke

Hi all!

My sunday started last night at 7:30 after getting off of probably the worst 4 days of my working career. Lots of calls, lots of crappy calls. The last of them ended up with me fighting in the back of my ambulance with a patient who decided to become very violent, and fight me. He ended up restrained to a gurney, but I think I got the worst of it with vomit all over my shirt and face. The patient "woke up" after having a bad seizure and went beszerker on me (very common). I can relate with the guy thought... How would you like to wake up to a 240lb heavily tattooed guy poking you with various shap objects.

So I went home last night, took a shower, opened up a bottle of Jameson whiskey and lit up a El Rico churchhill. My sharks won, but I lost against the whiskey and cigar. About 8 shots into the whiskey I realized that I forgot about a big bike ride I had to get up in the morning for...

Flash forward to the morning... Can you say hang over? Ya, well I went a little overboard with the drinking, and paid for it. Not too bad. I made a big breakfast consisting of an egg white omelet, oatmeal, and a protien shake. Washed it all down with some Aged sumatra and then got my bike gear together. I woke my brother up to go riding (he also had a long night of drinking with his motorcycle club). We didnt get out onto the trails untill about 11am (very late) so we spent the first portion of the ride dodging hikers, and ignoring their screams of anger due to our excessive speed. Once we were 10 miles into the trails we were all alone to blast down some very ruddy steep trails. It was a blast, and perfect weather for riding. However, the last 5 miles was an massive uphill climb back to the car, and well my body was not happy with me because of its abuse the night before. I must also add that I didnt smell too good because I didnt dodge some cowpies as well as I should have, but hell when you are bombing down some ruddy, rock strewn trails, who has time to dodge poo frisbies.

We eventually made it back to the car after 28 miles of strenious riding and headed home. I fired up the perculator and made some more Peet's aged sumatra, and lit up a very nicely aged Anejo. What a fantastic cigar, only the 2nd one I've ever found. I wish I could get ahold of these more often, but they seem more rare then the Opus X. I spent the time winding down from the ride and studying spanish. I have a final exam tomorrow... So ill be hitting the sack early tonight.

Anyways thats it for my sunday, Im gonna treat myself to a few cookies and go to bed.

Vince sorry about your coworker, but as you know sh!t happens, sometimes for the worse, sometimes for the better. What Im worried about is your health. Do they know what is causing the hypotension? I hope it is nothing to serious. Glad to hear your buddy is going home, that is great news, and I am betting he is very excited. My thoughts are with you!

Cian great story once again, I look forward to every week.

Adios amigos, Buenos Noches!

Well Rory its good to read your post, , you got an interesting tale there , but you can leave out the vomit on the face next time thank you hahahaha YUCK !
I have never ever in my life had a hangover, never , some people say this is not possable, seeing the amount I drink, but for some reason, I have never had any bad days after a night of debauchery & excess, I just sleep 10 to 12 hours, get up shower & eat a good breakfast & go to do what I need to do, , even when my daughter got married, I was $h1TFaced , , I was doing shots with EVERYONE, a beer in my left hand a scotch in my right hand & a gin & tonic ( cause it was hot outside) Fuzzy navels, ( I had a craving for the orange juice hahahaha ) , well after the bar closed the band stopped playing & every one had left it took 3 of my nephews to get me in the car & home, I woke up still in my tux on the glider on the back deck , the nephews were all in the house sleeping, they left me outside ! hahahaha I was snoring to much for them in the car so they figured to get any sleep leave me outside, glad they didnt lock the door on me I had to GO to the bathroom, well I went back outside , got back on the glider & slept till noon , got up showered & made pancakes eggs sausage & home frys for everyone, dammm young kids cant take a good drunk, they all had hangover, even the desinagted driver had a little but of queezyness, & he didnt have anything at all to drink, , I dont know about this next generation , soft, way to soft !
well I need to get a shower, I go to the doc this afternoon, no reason to go stinky hahahaha Enjoy, Vince

Lol. Im in the same park as you Vince...never had a hangover. I just end up sleeping whatever might happen to me away. My elbows always hurt though, and wake up massively dehydrated unless its caused by beer.

no dehydration, I drink a lot of water between drinks, yea it makes you go A LOT, but it keeps the kidneys working overtime, streches the bladder to the max, but it is worth the trouble not getting sick the next day, keep the water flowing, try to stay away from carbonated sweet drinks, its the sugar that gives you the hangover I think, , being a scotch drinker, I just sip a little water on the side, , it is a fact, if you add water to your whiskey you dilute the whisky , but if you add whiskey to your water, you make the water better ! hahahaha .
Enjoy, Vince

Lol. The typical hangover symptoms are actually caused by a bacteria that builds up in the blood stream that thrives on alcohol, and also being dehydrated.
I for the most part just drink a lot of beer or Mikes style drinks. Only time I drink the hard stuff is during a cigar, or maybe at night to help me sleep when nyquil and long hours at work dont cut it.

I think most of my problem is that I don't sleep enough, mostly 6 hours a night at the most, and at that its light broken sleep... Although I tend to powernap a lot.

I must have a large amount of anti bacterial stuff in my blood stream, just good genitics, , to bad it didnt work for my brother, he gets wicked hangovers, & will never learn , stupid @$$ , at his advanced age he still gets falling down drunk at times , one of these days he will fall & break a hip, , but he will still drink. , that will be a great time to kick his BUTT hahahahaha , he will be so full of drugs after the surgery, he will never remember it, but I will hahahaha
Enjoy, Vince

Sunday 18 Dec. 05
It has been a Cold week here in the Burgh, single digiets a few nights , rain freezing rain, slush sleet & snow where the order of the day all week , it is a real mess, the sun is out today & the roads are clear, no trouble getting arround .
we are going to see the Trans Siberian Orchestra tonight at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena, if they can get the stink of the Penguins out of the building , man are they bad this year .Mario Lameau & company stepped in cow $hit more times than I can count this season . this will be my first time Out & about since the surgery , I am looking Fwd. to getting out a bit, I hate being cooped up , dammmm I dont know how people can stand being in jail. I would be crazyer than I am real fast !
I still have one drain in the gut, going back to the doc Tuesday, maybe it will come out then, I hope, still in the binder, , the only relief I get from it is when Barb is washing & drying it, , I take a nap then !!!
The fire dept. had "Santa " on the truck last night , & the rug rats just happened to be here, they all got a small bag of candy , they were all pumped up by that, & on a sugar rush before they went home God help my daughter & son in law, kids bouncing off the wallls hahahahaha
I made a little french toast for brakfast along with the tofu, I put a little Serachhi sauce on the tofu & nice maple syrup on the french toast, well they did get a liitle mixed together , not bad , HOT STICKY SWEET, tofu & French toast, hummmm , might need to tweek that one a bit.
Thats about it from the Burgh this Sunday morning. headed to the kitchen to make some pasta dough , Ravolli on the menu today, 4 different cheeses for the filling, some meat balls on the side, I havent decieded if I am going to make a tomatoe sauce or garlic in olive oil. , I wonder if there is any Panchtta left? hummmm, got to go look before & figure out what I will make today .
Enjoy, Vince

With the 'lighting contest' done (Le Madame hung the plaque for 1st place in the kitchen next to her set of cleavers – there might be a message there!) my daughters, FuManChu (my golden retriever) and I put up the Christmas Tree (my wife, of course, supervised). (Bloofington: you have it exactly right: The definition of an Alpha Female is a female in the community whom others follow and defer to. Humans and their nearest species or relatives, chimpanzees (Le Madame took umbrage at this visual) show deference to the alpha of the community by ritualized gestures, i.e., bowing, and allowing the alpha to walk first in a procession (I pointed out to my children, this is much like the duck family that lived underneath my chair in the back of the house – going out for a stroll; Momma duck in the lead -- my wife pouted at that comparison and flounced out of the room. As Winston Churchill sagely noted: "Never hold discussions with the monkey when the organ grinder is in the room.") In sum, Le Madame always has a small army she either leads, directs or tramples.

It being the Holiday Season, we played Christmas carols and poured eggnog while trimming the tree. To quote Dave Barry: "In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it 'Christmas' and went to church; the Jews called it 'Hanukkah' and went to synagogue; the atheists went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say 'Merry Christmas!' or 'Happy Hanukkah!' or (to the atheists) 'Look out for the wall!'"

Coffee today: Indian Mysore (Extra Bold) (sent by my wife's brother) is a traditional market name for coffee from south-central India and is the highest grade of Indian wet-processed Arabica coffee. Extra Bold refers to the large bean size. The aroma: peach and chocolate tones balanced with cedar notes. This is a sweet coffee but it still has a strong morning flavor that makes my taste buds sing. My wife says 'not only am I a coffee addict but I have a picture of my coffee mug, on my coffee mug'! (I deny that; it is a drawing, not a picture!).

Cigar: Partagas Serie P No. 2 (vitola is Piramide). IMO, considering this is a new line of cigars (April, 2005) e.g., opinions and reviews are very subjective. That said, the construction is great (per Partagas). The wrapper is a dark chocolate brown, the draw was easy and the burn even. The taste starts soft and mild, and rises to a smooth peak until the Partagas machismo taste greets you. IMO, the PSP2 is a smoke that goes great with a sweet coffee. The stick is rich, complex and creamy. At the halfway point, earth and ground coffee flavors kick in followed by notes of toasted nuts, chocolate, leather and lots of smoke. IMO, this is cigar that takes at least an hour to smoke.

'Tis the season where my pockets get emptied out. My wife is flying to Miami tomorrow, with our daughters, to do the rest of her Christmas shopping; leaving Fu and I to our own devices. Of course, when I tell my wife money does not grow on trees, nor can it buy happiness (I really should know better by now, then to discuss money with Adrienne - - we Irish, however, are known for our enjoyment of vices, not common sense) she points out that 'whoever said money can't buy happiness, just doesn't know where to go shopping!'

My companero, FuManChu gave me a sympathetic look as the two of us head to my office (his expression reminds me of the day we got him as a puppy. When they let him out at the kennels, he went right over to my daughters and licked their faces; he bowed and scrapped to Le Madame who stroked his ears. He waddled over to me (I was standing behind my daughters), sat on my feet and pee'd on my shoes.

Ertha Kitt's "Santa Baby" is playing in the background and I am reminded of something Lana Turner once said: " A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man." Fu looks at my scribbling, yawns and plops on my feet.

P.S. (Rory, I enjoyed your piece on ambulance driving in the Bay Area. I lived in San Francisco for 15 years).

P.P.S. (Brother Vince, I have never tried that in a speeding car. I can only imagine what the effect would be down wind.)

Cian, great post, I enjoyed it, I have a picture in my mind of the Alpha Female trampling all over the island & everyone falling in line to do her bidding, your a lucky man !!!!!! She had Fu trained the second he saw her for the first time, , do you still have the same shoes hahahaha !
we went to see the trans siberian orchestra, last night, , I thought it was going to be a Christmas show, well it started out like that , but ended up a loud head bangers rock show complete witrh a lazer light & strobe light show , we left before it was over, I still have ringing in my ears & a head ache , at $42.50 a seat & the place was packed , they did 2 shows yesterday , made a ton of $$$ & I will not be going back next year if they come again, Give me Mannhime Steamroller anytime .
yesterdays ravalli was great, simmed in a chicken stock with a little white wine & some sliced garlic, a little thin tomato sause to top it off, not bad for a washed up old fart. if I do say so my self. , still have a little creative juice flowing , some place in my brain, be it ever so small , but every now & then it will come up with something .
Enjoy, Vince

Hey Vince good post. Sorry to hear about your sonic experiance, that must have been a real dreag to spend that kind of money and not enjoy the show.

How is the snow situation up there? Did you guys get anything from that BIG storm? I guess some people lost power for quite a while. I feel for them that is for sure.

Anyway, 4 days to Christmas, and I only want one thing. I want all our boys to come safely home from Iraq. We lost some more Canadians, and I just want it to end so we do not lose any more of anybodys sons and daughters!

Peace everyone, enjoy your week!
