Cian, did you know that Big Al played the 4 string banjo? , he played in a Jazz band in the joint, that was untill he used it as a hammer on the drummers head , the banjo is strung & played much like the mandolin or a violin , with out the bow, , My friend & minister Barrowed " my banjo a while back, I dont know if I will ever see it again hahahaha, his wife wants it out of the house, but mine said to keep it out of HER house, so I dont know what will happen next !
I am sipping a fine Abelour A'Brunda @ 121 proof it is like sipping honeywith a kick., I did manage to finish all the Kona & the Christmas Blend coffee( that had been brewed) today with a little help from the wife & I did manage one cigar , a big Fat Dark torp. with out a band on it, dammmm I wish I knew what it was , hahah
, the house still has the aroma of Kraut & pork, even with all the oder eater candles burning , it still is a stong aroma, , But just wait till the next " Aroma" hits the air, dammmmm it is going to stink in the Qtr.Deck on Monday hahaha, keep all open flames at arms lenght hahahaha !

Today was the first New years day I havent been swimming in the river with the Pittsburgh Polar Bear club in almost 20 years, the doc didnt think it would be good for the operation site this close to getting out of the hospital, oh well there is still next year., it is only 365 days away , or some thing like that.
I hope you all had a save & sober day, hahahaha, the only sober one here is the Teddy Bear on the bed,& the wife, she just had a sip of the wine & she did catch a wiff of my breath, dammmm she might be smashed & not know it hahahaha
We hit a high of 40F today, got to take down some of the Christmas trees on the front & back decks , not a nornal day for the Burgh in January., Time for a refill on the coffee, I have had my fill of scotch for the day, so said the BOSS, Decalf anyone? hahaha Enjoy, Vince

My Sunday Knight Football Cigare was an A. Fuente robusto with the light Connecticut shade wrapper. I lit this cigar at 2103 hours, and finished it at 2209 hours. This cigar has a flavor profile of spice, snappy chlorophyll notes, and occasional sweet creamy flavors, and just as it always does, kicked me in the head something fierce, not quite "Earnie Shavers" but pretty strong. I'm mystified, because it's so small and with the light Connecticut shade wrapper, who knew?

It must be the filler. I'm about to have a bowl of Progresso lentil soup to try and get rid of this kick in my head.

Misa made Lentil Soup yesterday said it was some kind of Czech tradition.
Eating Lentils means you'll have lots of money this year!

As for my smoke yesterday -
Diplimaticos #4 walking into the Jets game!

Touch Down Justin Miller! Was greta he ran right to where we were sitting. (This was Misa's second live game) Was a great game for us!
Smoked another Dip4 on the ride home.

Wow, that must've been great catching Miller after the touchdown. As for lentils and money, if that were true, I'd be Warren Buffet already.

you dont need cash to be Warren Buffett, you are rich , rich with friends & thats a lot better than $$$, sure you cant go out & spend friends like cash or trade friends for material things like cigars & great booze , but we are all rich in the fact that you grace the forum with your posts & wit. ( Now that the BS is flying ) I just came in from turning onn the heat in the Qtr.Deck, I will be headed out there in about an hour, so if any one wants to stop , the coffee is hot & the scotch is ready to serve, that is the easy part, just take the bottle off of the shelf & dump a dramm into a clean snifter, nothing else is needed , maybe a small splash of water, but not much else is needed, dammm I should be a bar tender, just pour whisky all day, & open the tap every so often, , hey I think I could do that ! hahahaha , some one wonce told me that a good bartender can by out the owner in 2 years hahahaha, I bet I could do it in less time than that hahahaha ! Enjoy, Vince

Hey CC, it is looking like we here in Kansas City will be getting Herman Edwards as our replacement for Dick. I personally am excited for the decision. I loved Dick as a coach, But I think that Herman should be able to step right in there. But lest I digress,
Let me just say that i have truely enjoyed reading this thread. You guys never fail to make me smile!

I wish you all the best that life has to offer this new year,
~Scott

As for Herman Edwards, good riddance, you guys can have him.

As for what Vince said about that club he hangs out in, the part where he said the club is 102 years old, I think that means Vince started the club when he was about 27, 28, right? :cryinlaugh:

As for losing folks you love, yes, that's one of the saddest and hardest parts about getting old, but I believe most of us are going to wind up living together forever anyway, after the final chapter is all wrapped up, so for now, we just need to keep on truckin'.

As for winter, where the heck is it? What happened to this ominous winter we heard was coming? Where are the minus 10-15 degree early morning periods we're usually experiencing here by this time of year?

WHERE'S WINTER???

Have a great day, everyone. For all us football fans, it's ON!!!

FuManchu, my golden retriever, and I were busy on the boat all morning. It would probably be more accurate to say we were ‘busy’ being idle; me in my chair and Fu plopped on my feet taking note of all the inviting seagulls, pelicans and water birds cruising by, but not energetic enough to do anything about it.

Fu and I often ponder the difficult questions of our times while spending time at the harbor. Questions such as: “What to have for lunch, should we move the chair 3 feet to avoid getting terribly sunburned” or “how to teach my companero to fetch bottles of beer from the galley."

Of course, my wife does not agree and accuses both of us of being lazy. As I told Le Madame in defense of myself and my companero, no less a notable figure than Benjamin Franklin said: “Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting, before you get tired.”

My Washington Redskins advanced in the playoffs on Saturday so life is good. Le Madame, like many Europeans, thinks American football is a just violent game without purpose and if a man watches three football games in a row, he should be declared legally dead. Au contraire, I explained to my wife that Jay Leno said: “According to a Sports Illustrated poll, 30% of males said they would rather watch a big playoff game than have sex. The other 70% said ‘hey, that’s why they have half time."

Coffee this morning was Costa Rican Tres Rios that a friend of mine dropped off. This coffee is a sun dried Arabica brew that is grown in central Costa Rica. It has a rich aroma with fresh-cut cedar, raisin, and semi-sweet chocolate notes. IMO, the slight bitter edge in the cup adds to the overall taste and contributes to a long finish. The coffee is very full bodied.

In the history of coffee there is a story about a wealthy oilman named John Gates who once placed an $11,000 bet with the John Drake (whose family founded Drake University), that his bread, dunked in coffee, would attract more flies than Drake's. Gates won. It later turned out that Gates had added six spoonfuls of sugar to his coffee. And everyone thinks coffee drinkers are boring!

Cigar: El Rey del Mundo Choix Supreme (vitola is Hermoso No. 4). The wrapper is oily, dark and smooth. The stick lights easily and I got good amounts of thick smoke in the first puffs. IMO the flavors of this smoke are elegant, having a definite Cuban taste and gradually increasing in taste by the middle of the smoke. IMO the smoke has notes of wood, leather, pepper, dark cherries and cinnamon. The finish is long. Overall, IMO, this is a mild to medium flavored cigar. This is not a favorite cigar, but it is a good smoke to enjoy with hot, sweet coffee. Personal satisfaction and enjoyment is one of those conditions that is hard to define. As my favorite Irish philosopher, Emo Philips observed: “Happiness is like a precious Ming vase balanced on the head of a dancing drunk.”

Cian has come through like the sun across my neighborhood today, in his usual shining brilliance, replete with famous quotes. The Redskins certainly are looking fierce right now. Cian's posts are like when a cake has all the base frosting put on, and the final ornate touches are added in the form of design frosting, and perhaps other touches on top. Great post, as usual. I take it you're a famous writer in disguise? Tell Le Madame that AmBack has found it's Hemingway, and I mean the man, not the cigar!

No sorry I didnt start it , I wish I had.We do have a lot of fun !!

,
WHO cares where winter is as long as it isnt here ! it is 40F here in the Burgh today, ( 68 in the Qtr.Deck) I just finished a Cuba Aldios odd shapped SOB, big torp with a hemmingway like tip on the foot, about a 60 ring at the largest section & a good 6.5 maybe 7 inches long, I have no idea what the name of this monster is, it took the better part of 2 hours to smoke with the end of todays Kona , No scotch yet, I dont want to get to far gone before the game today, I dont know IF I will watch it, but I want to be ready if I do.
Cian , your post has me wanting to go out & get my own Golden Retriver, I had a Wimeriner (sp) when I was a mear kid & miss having a dog , but I dont really want to clean up dog $hit , & the cat might kick its @$$ ( 17 pound Tomcat ) he comes & goes as he pleases, never wants to stay in the house even on the fridged cold nights he wants out, so out he is, he comes back when he is ready, I dont even keep a litter box any more for him, he never used it much anyhow, always wanted to go outside, so I let him, less work for me, My daughter has a Black Lab. he is a lot of fun so when I need a dog fix I take him for a walk, he loves to cause trouble when we go out, , he loves to sniff ladys croches , geee a dog just like me hahahahaha .
the wife taled me into makinig Ravolli today, so my vacation from the kitchen is over, got to go make pasta, & get the water on to boil, grate some cheese & make a garlic olive oil , dammmm a mans work is never done hahahaha Enjoy, Vince

I knew you couldn't stay out of the kitchen. :cryinlaugh: I'm headed for a vacuum cleaner myself, until the second game comes on.

Great words for a great day guys, keep it up!!

You are tight Bloof, where the heck is winter? We have been having it unusually mild in Saskatchewan for this time of year. I remember one January about 7 years ago, it went down to -28 celcius the first week of January and stayed there for over 28 consecutive days with lows of -30 interspersed. That my friends, was cold!! It just won't be the same without some cold weather, but so it goes, at least it isn't flooding like in California, I really feel for those people, I would rather have snow than rain any day of the week.

There you go, a weather report is all you get today. Enjoy the rest of the week gang!

I made a small batch of pasta , just 18 ravollis , I cooked them all, we had 8 left over, it almost seams like a lot of work for such a small out come , they were first class in apperance & taste ( what else would you expect) but it was a lot of work, dammmm I guess I am just getting lazy or maybe just tired, hey it could be both , or maybe just old age hahahaha Enjoy, Vince

Coffee today is Toraja, which is grown on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi from waist-thick coffee trees over a hundred years old. It has a buttery texture in your mouth, complex cocoa flavors, a little spiciness and hints of dark cherry. IMO, it is a coffee that is bracing early in the morning, and if you like coffee with a cigar, it’s just the ticket.

Cigar: Partagas Serie D No. 4 (vitola is Robusto). IMO, this smoke booms with creaminess, spice and notes of wood with undertones of some earth and nuts. IMO, the PSD4 is Partagas' most consistent cigar. In eleven years of smoking, I have never had a plugged or bad PSD4. The stick takes me an hour and twenty minutes to smoke. The flavors change considerably as I smoke it down, with thick, rich smoke circling my head. IMO, PSD4 is strong from beginning to end, but not harsh or ashy. It produces a taste that's spicy and woody all the way. The finish is long.

Le Madame found us quietly slipping out of the house early this morning and observed that ‘the two of us were like two guilty Irish brothers trying to slip out and away to a pub without being discovered’. I pointed out to Le Madame, that this wasn’t an accurate accounting. In the first place, Fu’s ancestry is English (but he and I ignore that fact), yes we both have facial hair (I wear a beard) but I comb the beard and mine does not grow all the way from the chin to hairline, as his does. Finally, we were not headed to the pub (we’d already been there and secured Guinness for me) but to the boat. As my father would say to my mother when she caught him being devious and would demand an explanation: “My love”, my father would say, “what's the difference between roast beef and pea soup? Anyone can roast beef,” and saying that he would flee.

Five large cruise liners are in port this Sunday (many of the passengers to come ashore at the same time, so we are looking at something between 12,00-15,000 folks arriving in St. Thomas within an hour of each other) with snowbirds from around the world, looking for sunshine, trinkets and the occasional cigar to enjoy in the sunshine. FuManChu, (my golden retriever and companero) and I are watching all the activity from my boat in the harbor.

As I tell Fu, this reminds me of the day my eldest daughter was born. I was 43 when I married; my wife being eighteen years younger than myself. One year later, there I was in the labor and delivery room on St. Thomas (we relocated from Chicago six month before) as my beloved Adrienne gave birth to our first child. I didn’t know what to expect. I was thrilled, scared, shocked and filled with a consuming love for my new daughter. After a time, the delivery room nurse came back with my new daughter and asked me if I would like to hold her. I did. She looked normal (albeit bald and very red).

As I scrutinized every inch of her, my heart froze. The bottoms of both her feet were black; coal black. ‘Acch’, I thought, ‘Jesus, Mary, Mother and Joseph’ (this covers all of the important members of Irish Catholic pub deities), how could my darling get such terrible birthmarks? How could we fix this! Acch! What was I going to do. My wife, lying in the bed, must have seen the expression on my face because she called me to come over, which I did. She asked what was wrong. I didn’t know what to say (by this time the labor and delivery nurse was standing by the bed, too). I pointed to her feet.

My wife and the nurse looked at the baby’s feet, then at each other. Adrienne burst out laughing and called me a great Irish boob. There was, she explained, nothing wrong with her feet; no deformity or birthmark. In the Virgin Islands, as in many other hospitals, they “foot print” babies, as opposed to “finger prints”, just after they are born and the baby hadn’t had a bath yet.

I looked at Fu and he wags his tail. Time for our sandwich. I get out the brown bread sandwich layered with mashed potatoes, topped with another layer of potato chips. Guiness for me, water for Fu. As George Bernard Shaw observed: “Where subtlety fails us we must simply make do with cream pies.”

P.S. (Bloofington – those are very kind words, thank you. I will only say that I have, on occasion, contributed the occasional article to The Economist. I truly enjoy (and admire) the free flowing pieces you and Vince have contributed to the Sunday Smoke.

Cian checks in!!! :D I know one thing for sure. Waist high coffee trees sure makes pickin' dem cherries a lot easier.

Oops, you said waist-thick coffee trees. Oh well, time for the ladder. The Partagas Serie D No. 4 is certainly one of the best cigars I've ever smoked, and yes, very consistent. I've been blessed with a few in my years of cigar smoking. That sandwich sounds good. I'm going to have to learn how to make mashed potatoes, just to be able to make that sandwich. Mash and chips, anyone?
