Morning all and Good monday morning Vince.
You were a great host friday eve. Thanks for the scotch and for hooking me and RK up with some good smoke. The Rocky Patel 92 was very good. Smoked the "Edge " on Sunday. Wow...excellent cigar. Might have to stop by this week for a couple more if I'm in the area. Will have to free up another friday eve. I had fun!
Thanks
Steve

Nice to see the social aspect of the cigar smoking community blossoming here at cigar.com and Your American Back Yard.

Just finished having my Sunday morning cigar. I forget when I lit it, but it was quite a while ago. It went gone out two or three times. It was a Carlos Torano Exodus 1959. This smoke confirms that I like the 1916 much better, but this has been a very good cigar nonetheless.

Most of the first half tasted like a very monotonous, constantly charred flavor. In the second half, creamy, earthy notes began to poke through with the occasional floral tones and some leather and spice. This very slow burning cigar kicked me in the head pretty good, and I would recommend it for some of our stronger cigar smokers. If I find any more of these in my humidors, they're getting a lot more age.

In a couple hours, Vince and his Don Carlos #3 will be checking in, along with some fine coffee. It's a cool, very humidity free night here in Lower Dutchess County, as a strange cool snap cuts into one of the most uncomfortable summers on record.

Ahhhhhhhh, bourbon season is temporarily back on :sm_angel: , and the wonderful meditative experience of a fhine, fhine, pttttemium cigahhhhh.

Life can still be good in America.

Ahhh yes a cool Sunday morning, low humidity & a pot of Brizilian Santos & my buddy Don Carlos III , Life is great, I have a string quartet on the radio with a little Mozart in the head phones ( dont want to wake up the boss ) this has been a brutial year for the yard, the heat & lack of rain have turned Gods little green acher in the a brown patch of weeds ( & not the kind you can smoke Bloof) I t was a slow week at the cigar shop, but we did get a new customer, a verrrrry atrative young ( mid 30's) Blond who likes Full body cigars , a Camacho smoker , ahhh yes blond, blue eyes , great buttttt, & smokes cigars , what a way to go hahahahaha ,
We went to Cannonsburg Pa yesterday, a Baby shower for my nephew T.J. & his wife , first baby for them , , it was about 45 miles from here so my wife wanted me to drive her & her mother, , it was at a hotel with a bar ( Great for me ) , so off we went , I had a 21 year old Dalmore, along with a fine mug of Kona & a Diamond Crown Maximus Churchill, what a way to spend the afternoon ! yea baby , so I had about 3 hours to kill & the cigar was good for just over 2 hours , that left me a little time to have a little soup, they offered a shrimp & chirzo chowder , it was great, spicy & the corn was fresh picked that morning, ( so said the chef ) , since I had some time to kill & I am not shy I asked to go back to the kitchen , like I needed the time to get to know the chef & bartender & the general Manager of the place, , hey if you need or want something special they are the people who can make it happen!! you know a few fine well placed cigars will open a lot of doors !!!
The hotel served $tarbucks coffee, but it was better than the swill you get from $tarbucks , not nearly as burnt tasting as the $tarbucks we have here , I can honestly say , there coffee was almost as good as mine !!!
The weather here has been fantastic the past few days but Monday we are looking at a high of 90+ & humidity above 70%, I will be in the Qtr.Deck with the A/C on full blast & the exaust fan on high maybe taking a nap just to beat the heat !!!
I have some Talpia defrosting as I type this , I havent thought how I am going to cook it , maybe with some rice & pineapple with roasted red peppers, or maybe go New Orleans style with a little tabasco instead of the pineapple , add some chicken livers to the rice , maybe, who knows till it is time to cook, by then I might just decide to grill it with bamboo shoots & bean sprouts hahahaha
The Grandsons spent the night here Wed. & Thursday , so it was like having the weekend in the middle of the week , we had a good time , they are 7 & 9, man it is fun having boys in the house , growing up like bad weeds ( no not the kind you can smoke Bloof,,,, again ) , they seem to get taller every time I see them, the 7 year old said he is to big to hug now,so he wants to shake hands , but the 9 year old still will give you a big squeeze when you see him ! , Dammmm I feel old ! in 15 years or so I could be a Great grandfather & my little daugher could be a grandmother hahahah, now I reaaaaallllly feeeel old hahahaha !!!
I think I will grab a few cook books & see what variations I can come up with for the fish today, , hey how about steamed in Vermouth ??? hummm maybe with some braised fennell, , oh well that is a few hours away I will figure it out some time before I start to cook. unless I just pan fry it in butter & extra V olive oil , no thought prosses there , just cook the S.O.B. & eat it, , if it was fresh not frozen I would marinade it in lime juice add some hot peppers & eat it like that, No fire at all ! servechi style
Time for an other pot of coffee , I hope you all enjoy the beautfull Sunday Morning , Enjoy, Vince

There he goes again. How many recipes did Vince just give us this morning? This guy doesn't even have to do it on purpose, it just rolls off his tongue. As for weeds you smoke, I've got plenty of my own, thanks just the same.

:cryinlaugh: :sm_angel: :sm_angel:

And as for that Diamond Crown Maximus Churchill, I had one recently. It drew very well, rather bland until the second half. I had it for a long time, because I had been scared to smoke it. Overall though, I was surprised at how easy it was to smoke, because I figured it would put a thumping on me, like an Opus X. I guess I aged it long enough.

And as for that new customer in the cigar store, . . .

I'LL BE RIGHT OVER, TELL HER TO WAIT!!!

:cryinlaugh: :cryinlaugh: :cryinlaugh:

Oh, and yes, we're about to get kicked in the butt again with some tremendously high heat in the early part of the week. Tuesday looks like it's going to be the bad boy of the bunch.

Yes Boys the heat is on its way back. The weather guessers are talking about mid 90's all week. Well its 87 outside and I just put on 4 lbs of "country ribs". Its some sort of boneless pork cut into strips. I have eatin them for years but still don't know exactly whear on the pig they come from, I bet Vince knows. Anyway, I rubbed them up real good with some home made rub. They are on the grill on indirect heat at about 250 F. I just finished mixing up some bourbon BBQ mop sause. There war a little Bakers left over from last nights small get together, about 2 shots.
The Three ceiling fans I put up on the screened in porch are doing thier thing. The whole family is comming over including the 14 month grandson. He has stopped walking and just runs now. He is doing great his favorite word are Cheese, Pap Pap & Quack. The boy loves to eat. Its time to check the porch and fire up one of these RyJ Maduroes I just got from JR's.

Good to see BigTom checking from his very own version of The Big Pig Jig. It's 87 up here too, humidity is very, very low, and I'll be going out for some yard work in about an hour. I have some Jack and The Beanstalk type stuff out by the mailbox in the hedge along the driveway, and some general mowing and raking to do elsewhere. It hasn't gotten out of hand yet, and it will be good for me to catch up to my neighbors again, have it nice and trim, clean by sunset. Maybe then it'll be time for another cigar as we await the latest heat wave.

Enjoy that pig, BigTom. Who cares where it comes from as long as it tastes good. Sounds like BigTom is a man that knows how to work a grill. Maybe he SHOULD enter The Big Pig Jig.

sounds like you have a "special"day in the works BT, I just came in from a fine Cheep smoke, a brand called Top shelf, delsol , a friend( yes I do have a few) was on vacation some place in the outter banks, this was the store brand, a 7 x 52 , that had the slight taste of roasted corn to it, I wanted to dip it in melted butter !, I dont know what part of the pig the pork was from BT, but I would guess it is from the rib area , I do know that a pigs ass is pork & the part it sits on is pressed ham!!!! hahahaha ! Enjoy, Vince

I got lazy , didnt feel like doing a lot of prep work for supper so I sliced an onion, crushed a few cloves of Garlic, & & steamed the talipia on the bed of onions & garlic with a little shrimp stock from the freezer , a dash of Tabasco green & some soy sauce & anchovie paste , quick easy & tasty, a big mug of brazilian santos & a red lable Don Kiki churchill to finish it all off with, now I am sitting back, waiting for the onions & garlic to kick in hahahahaha , turned out to be a nice day here in the Burgh, the Pirates won , but I have no idea who they played, probably some High school team ! hahahaa .we did get a little rain but not enough to wet the side walk, the grass needs the rain but then it will grow & need to get cut again, Dammmm I dont know what to wish for hahahaha !!!
2 more pieces of talpia in the freezer, maybe some time this week, but you never know.
I have a blood test in the morning, so I need to fast after 8 pm tonight, , 12 hours before the blood test, I will sleep 8 of them so it should be easy hahahaha , I am allowed water & black coffee so it should be no problem, as long as I can have my morning coffee & Don Carlos III I will be just fine !!!!
Enjoy, Vince

Good Luck on that blood test ! I stayed up all night studying for my last one. I passed with flying colors.
The pork turned out pretty good. I am having trouble getting started early enough to really slow cook the meat. If it takes more than 3 or 4 hrs there won't be any Tom left sober enough to eat dinner. Yesterday I did switch to some homemade Lemon-Limeade for the first 2 hrs. When Son-in-law to be showed up we started fixing up the juice with some Bourbon and Tripple Sec. I guess I will never get on the Big Pig Jig.
We did a couple of bottles of Virginia Reds with the Pig and had a couple of more cigars (RyJ Beli's Maduro's) after the meal. All in All it was a pretty good day.

It seems like members of the Sunday Morning Smoke are going through a major heat wave, (I’ve been hearing on the news about large chunks of Eastern U.S. being engulfed with high humidity and temperatures). All I can say is: “Gentlemen, (ladies) start your air conditioners.”

It is about 85% here today, and over the weekend (now that Emily and Dennis are history) about 82 with a nice breeze. If you live on the equator, the weather doesn’t change much without a big assist from a storm front.

Sunday was FuManChu’s birthday. He hit the big “1”. Since the family (except for Fu and me) is in France stomping grapes, we talked it over and decided to declare his birthday a “scotch, cigar and beef-bone day” (No, Bloofington, I will not let Fu drink my scotch. I know for a fact that he doesn’t have a credit card and never carries cash). My latest order of smokes were in, so with my first mate’s agreement, we decided to sail to the British Virgin Islands for the day’s festivities.

I have a small galley on my boat, and since we left in the a.m. (got to have that morning coffee) I made Aged Sumatran – rich, and flavorful with a concentrated dried fruit sweetness, herbal notes, and a big taste. These beans were aged 3 years in Singapore (across the Straits of Malacca from Medan). Aging is done in a wet tropical environment, where beans take on moisture at the peak of the monsoon, and give it back during drier seasons, without ever drying out completely (or so I am told). At any rate, it’s perfect for a morning brew (definitely pops my eyeballs open). It takes about an hour and a half to get to BVI from Havensight, and since it was not a windy day, I opted for a Juan Lopez Seleccion No. 2 (medium/robusto). IMO it goes very well with strong, hot coffee. This stick mixes different flavors very well, which makes it attractive to all kinds of smokers. What I notice is the wood (mainly cedar notes) and flowers join in a very smooth and pleasant way.

We arrived in Road Town (Capital City of BVI), in no time. Since it was the first mate’s birthday, we stopped in to see the local butcher who, of course, is a Fu fave (almost as much as pelicans). The butcher handed me a package of beef bones. Naturally, we had to stop across the street at the local bar (dawgs are welcome, even non-paying ones) where I had some Balvenie 12 Year Old Double Wood Single Malt Scotch; warms you up in no time. Since Fu was working over 3 of the beef bones outside, I thought we might settle in. Cell phone rang. It was my wife calling from the farm, with my daughters, and they wanted to sing happy birthday to FuManChu. So, I put my cell on speaker, called him over and he got to listen (as did the other drunks in the bar). After lots of barking, mixed French and English (dawg speaks more French than I do), the call ended with my wife admonishing me about “drunk sailing in the islands” and “not to let Fu drown”. The two of us headed over to pick up my cigars.

My cigar vendor in BVI is an old friend and he likes Fu a lot (especially his name – considering that I named him after one of the most insidious criminal master minds of the 1930s movies “Dr. Fu Man Chu”. Since biz was slow this day, and he was making some money off of me, we torched a couple of sticks from his private humidor: H. Upmann Sir Winstons (Churchill). IMO, this is another one of those grand cigars. You can smell aromas of musk, and taste the wood and toasty coffee. The roll is first rate and it is a big smoke. It went very well with the Port we were drinking from his cellar (1963 Fonseca Vintage Port). (Bloofington: No, I don’t let Fu drink Port either – someone has to read the map to get home).

Now that I am older, I am a big fan of Port wine. Evelyn Waugh, a well known British writer once said: “Port is not for the very young, the vain and the active. It is the comfort of age and the companion of the scholar and the philosopher”. (add somewhat loaded sailors and you get the general drift).

We finally said our goodbyes to the cigar dealer and made it back to the dock. Fu was happily munching on his beef bones. I was trying not to set my beard on fire while lighting up a La Gloria Cubana Medaille d Or No. 2 (just picked up in my package). This Lonsdale has many deep, rich and creamy flavors. I swear you can smell the cocoa off of the smokes, wrapper and the box. IMO, just as well constructed as the Partagas 8-9-8.

The sun had set and the moon was rising. Fu and I made a command decision to sit out on the water for awhile until one of us (not saying who) sobered up. Fu consumed all of his birthday bones, and that done, came over and plopped in my lap. I put on some Nat King Cole. Moonrise in the Caribbean is always pretty.

Bloof, Big Tom & all the rest of the cigar smokers who read this Sunday morning smoke, , , WE NEED to go on a road trip to visit Cian !!!!!hahahaha Enjoy, Vince

Great idea Vince ! I know exactally where to find that sailor boy. I could just smell that Sir Winston. Man what a cigar. When I ge down that way it is usually some of the fine VI Rum that I drink. Pursers (sp) is the brand in the BVI. I wonder how many that small craft will sleep ? Of cousre down there all you need is a clear spot of deck, pillow and maybe a light cover to keep the dew off. I will be working on a plan.

Small craft? Not with Vince around. He's an ex-Navy guy. He told me he's going to call in some favors, and have a battleship brought out of mothballs for us to take this trip in. Imagine smoking a cigar sitting in the deck turrets with the 16" guns.

 :sm_angel:

Ahhhh...The carib!
Me and my wife were in St. Thomas 2 years ago for a week. I would love to go back. Such a relaxing place. :D

Vince may never have gotten out of the galley, but as the ship's cook, he literally held everyone's life in his hands, including the Admiral's. :sm_angel:

This past week has been a real Pain In the @$$ , a verrrrry good friend had a 10 hour heart operation & I spent the freeking day in a waiting room at the hospital with out a cigar or a scotch, no food to speak of other than the machine quizene , the coffee was as weak as the stuff my wife makes & the a/c was set at about 80 & to top it all off when I had to GO, there was no toilet paper in the mens room, glad I saw that Before I sat down !!! , so last night there is a concert on the river in Rochester Pa , so my wife & I go down, this is an open air venue right on the river , under the bridge , a very nice location , about 500 seats are set up & I sit in the last row along with my wife, I have a cup of Great stong coffee, (Brazilian Santos )& a Zino Grand Master , in a shinny fat black tube , I am in heaven, sitting there with the setting sun to my back, great Jazz live on stage a fine cup O joe & a wonderfull cigar ~~~ & then , "Do you know how much air polution you are making with that cigar ?" , Dammmm I thought the guy was just pulling my chain, but he was realllllly pissed off , it seams he didnt like my cigar or the fact I was smoking in public, with all the Sr citezens arround surly some of them have problems with the smoke , he went on & on & kept getting louder all the time, I did remain clam to my wifes suprise , he wants me to smash out the offending cigar & I told him, I would move my chair , he said that would be ok with him, so I stood up & just like George C Scott did in the Hustler , I moved my chair about 6 inches & sat back down, well this big jerk was Pissed to no end, "so you think your a smart @$$ do you " , & I did remain clam cool & collected my thoughts & did tell him in a nice soft non menising voice that my cigar cost more than his shirt & smelled a lot better than he did , then I stood up & told him very quietly to get the F away from me or I would slit his throat when he was sleeping & rape his wife & shoot his dog & never once did I raise my voice or loose the smile on my face , no one but him heard what I had to say so he looked like a big wind bag yelling in front of all the people , my wife asked me what I said to make him shut up & I told him I was going to let you kick his ass while I stood & watched, , he left with his wife & there friends soon after , & ON TOP OF ALL THAT , THE EX SON IN LAW , changed jobs gets less hours & lost his medical insurance to cover the grandsons , well my daughter has been a Bigger Bitch than she is naturally , with my Mother in law having altzhimers , the state repaving the road in front of my home making dust & noise , & with all the jack hammering & diamond saw cutting of the road, my well caves in & needs a new pump, Dammmm it has been a bad week !!!!
BUT the weight is doing fine, I have lost a total of 162 & still going , about 50 more will get me to 205 , my target weight , then some more cutting to remove a lot of Hanging skin from the belly area , it just hangs there like a deflated innertube , well that will come off some time after the first of the year , I have been eating a lot of Tofu & drinking more coffee than I did in the past , I slosh when I walk hahahaha well that is about all I have to say right now! , AHHHH I feel much better now ! , if I could only take a good dump with out fighting to get it out I would be a lot better, but thats a lot more than you really need to know hahahaha !! Enjoy, Vince
