and a good weekend was had by all.....
The Ms. British Virgin Islands pageant was held Saturday evening. Since this is now a corporate sponsored event, it has taken off in popularity (where 500 people, mostly locals attended before -- over 2,000 now). No, I was't a judge, but we had very good seats, 3 tables back from the stage. As a member of the "shouldn't your pacemaker be turned down" club, I thought I was very well behaved; no excessive drooling or trying to hold my stomach in for 4 hours (the length of the show) -- an impossibility for me at any rate.
This is more of a dinner, drinks and social event, so that most of us could say: "oh really, a beauty contest so that explains all of the parked cars and the swim suits here". Smoking was allowed and after consuming several bottles of a Haute Medoc (90) and Pinot Grigio (1987s), we proceeded on with the cigars. We torched Romeo y Julieta Exhibicion 2000 LEs. These are Excellent cigars. They have very rich and layered flavors without being overwhelming; IMO tasting of espresso, wood and sweet leather with a fruity overtone. Great construction as always and good smoke.
After Ms. Bvi was crowned we left for the monthly poker game which, this month, was here in BVI. Whoever hosts the game also has to furnish cigars, drinks, etc.
(Big Tom: My boat sleeps 8 -- (stateroom aft and smaller cabin to the stern, bunk beds for crew in mid stern, small galley that opens up to a breakfast area -- the deck will accomodate up to 12 -- if you are dead drunk and sleep nose to feet, and as you pointed out, you don't mind the morning dew for a shower).
Bkelm - thank you for the kind words. Life on the equator is different from most others and I have grown to enjoy it.
Blo0fington: My brother in law wants to know when you will write more of your "observations".
The poker game finally broke up at 5:00 a.m. I know this because my cell wrang (it was my wife inquiring as to whether I was just getting up, or had I bothered going to bed at all, and just what was I doing?). In between "yes, dear, no dear" when I could get a word in through the torrent of French and "of course I paid the utilities and yes, I took my vitamins (with Scotch, much better), I lit up a fat Partagas and glared at all of my compatriots who were starting to laugh in the background.
The Partagas was an 8-9-8 Barnizados Dalia - a fine smoke -- dry and sultry but with a rich earthy taste that continues to please. Construction was great, burned like a champ; very strong but good with a double espresso, which our host was serving. Since I had actually won at poker (for me a fairly rare happening), once I got off the phone with Le Madame, the coming morning seemed especially good (the hangover would come later). But for now, I'd enjoy it.
