Sunday Morning Smoke

and a good weekend was had by all.....

The Ms. British Virgin Islands pageant was held Saturday evening. Since this is now a corporate sponsored event, it has taken off in popularity (where 500 people, mostly locals attended before -- over 2,000 now). No, I was't a judge, but we had very good seats, 3 tables back from the stage. As a member of the "shouldn't your pacemaker be turned down" club, I thought I was very well behaved; no excessive drooling or trying to hold my stomach in for 4 hours (the length of the show) -- an impossibility for me at any rate.

This is more of a dinner, drinks and social event, so that most of us could say: "oh really, a beauty contest so that explains all of the parked cars and the swim suits here". Smoking was allowed and after consuming several bottles of a Haute Medoc (90) and Pinot Grigio (1987s), we proceeded on with the cigars. We torched Romeo y Julieta Exhibicion 2000 LEs. These are Excellent cigars. They have very rich and layered flavors without being overwhelming; IMO tasting of espresso, wood and sweet leather with a fruity overtone. Great construction as always and good smoke.

After Ms. Bvi was crowned we left for the monthly poker game which, this month, was here in BVI. Whoever hosts the game also has to furnish cigars, drinks, etc.

(Big Tom: My boat sleeps 8 -- (stateroom aft and smaller cabin to the stern, bunk beds for crew in mid stern, small galley that opens up to a breakfast area -- the deck will accomodate up to 12 -- if you are dead drunk and sleep nose to feet, and as you pointed out, you don't mind the morning dew for a shower).

Bkelm - thank you for the kind words. Life on the equator is different from most others and I have grown to enjoy it.

Blo0fington: My brother in law wants to know when you will write more of your "observations".

The poker game finally broke up at 5:00 a.m. I know this because my cell wrang (it was my wife inquiring as to whether I was just getting up, or had I bothered going to bed at all, and just what was I doing?). In between "yes, dear, no dear" when I could get a word in through the torrent of French and "of course I paid the utilities and yes, I took my vitamins (with Scotch, much better), I lit up a fat Partagas and glared at all of my compatriots who were starting to laugh in the background.

The Partagas was an 8-9-8 Barnizados Dalia - a fine smoke -- dry and sultry but with a rich earthy taste that continues to please. Construction was great, burned like a champ; very strong but good with a double espresso, which our host was serving. Since I had actually won at poker (for me a fairly rare happening), once I got off the phone with Le Madame, the coming morning seemed especially good (the hangover would come later). But for now, I'd enjoy it.

cian

P.S. Vince - I hope your friend improves.

Cian, it has become a Sunday ritual to read your post here. I always look forward to the Sunday morning smoke!!!

So its a Don Carlos in the morning, a La tradicion
on the way in , a Monte number one on the way home , not to mention the price of gas ($2.45 ) a gallon , I am getting about 22/24 MPG on the highway & $4.25 to park ( if I get out of the garage before the 2 hour limit) then the price goes up , he better get better fast it is costing me a ton of cash ! hahahaha !!
the feeding tube is gone from the nose & now is direct into the stomach , he still cant swallow with out getting it into his lungs , but he is awake , alive & sticking his tounge out at the nurse when she takes his temp./BP so there is a lot of the OLD mike still there !!
I am going to make stuffed chicken breasts for supper today, or maybe a little chicken cordon blu( ham & cheese stuffed chicken breast ) some fresh spinich pita with lots of feta cheese
Monday is Barb & my 35 anniv. , I got her a saphire pinky ring, it is deeeeeep darrrrrk blue , almost looks like onyx till the light hits it & BAMMMM this blue flash hits you , I hope she likes it !!!! , still need to get a card, I will be going to the hospital my self Monday evening for an over night stay ( some way to celebrate your 35th anniv) I have a sleep study to do , maybe I can get off the C-Pap for my sleep apena now that I have lost 167 pounds, yep down to 250 right on the button !!
I havent been sipping much single malt , just to dammmmm hot, I have been sipping a lot of coffee with my cigars when I drive, Brazillian Santos, on the way in & Kenya AA or Columbian on the way home , I have my Sunday Kona brewing right now & will be grabbing a Don Carlos III soon, , I did try a Butera corona yesterday but It just isnt as good in the early morning as a DCIII.
I better get to the kitchen & see whats here to make supper , the menu is set (depending on what is in the pantry ) so you all have a great day & enjoy the wonderfull day
, Enjoy, Vince

Still reading, Vince, just not much time for long posts or conversations these days. Congratulations on another five pounds and your 35th. The Lord bless you both, and your buddy too, for a speedy recovery. Keep sending the nurse in there, maybe he'll rise up quickly and stay up. :cryinlaugh: :sm_angel:

The talk of the town is a forecast of a very busy hurricane season (a possible 20 storms). You couldn’t tell this by today’s weather: 83 and sunny. FuManChu, my golden and I were at the harbor most of the day, watching water birds floating on the breeze. In the islands they are called the trade winds and come up in the mornings and evenings. The prevailing breeze today is towards the British Virgin Islands and lower Bahamas (where I like to go whenever possible).

Captain: Thank you for the kind words. But, I just take my place here on the Sunday Morning Smoke, far behind Vince and Bloofington. If you read back to where this string starts, I think you will understand why.

Vince: Big congrats due you and Mrs. Vince. 35 years is amazing.

I tried a new blended coffee that I made in the galley. It is an African blend grown in Ethiopia. IMO, Ethiopia produces some of the best coffee in the world and continues to grow it in the same way it did centuries ago (considering the political history of this area, that is not surprising). The beans are grown by small holder growers in outlying villages and are the result of three years of production to create a coffee that is strong, spicy and with flavors of mocha and wine-dark berry.

Being like Vince (good coffee calls for a cigar) I reached into my boat bag and pulled out a Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No. 1 (cabinet). I like to start mornings with a smoke that does not set my hair on fire. This is a well-rolled cigar, looks good enough to eat and oozes the aroma of sweet, floral tobacco. After torching it, the smoke starts off mild (for a Havana), easing into a solid medium flavor and body. The notes of cocoa, vanilla, and brown sugar are very complex and IMO, delicious. The burn was a tad uneven but caused no problems, and I did not have to relight. Altogether very creamy and smooth, unlike the Epicure No. 2 which is much spicier.

Havensight had a lot of traffic today. Small craft (we call them bikini boats, for obvious reasons) are everywhere and Fu always gets up in the bow and (as first mate) greets all who pass by. Today he hailed a launch with 5 or 6 young women on it who pulled up alongside. This is how I always get into trouble.

Fu, of course, was overjoyed (you’d think I ignore him – I always let him count the cards at poker and never forget to invite him to dinner), and promptly did one of his old puppy tricks: he forgot where he was and jumped right into the bay. Now my wife, Le Madame, has rules for our household: “do not let the dawg drown” is right up there next to “no drunk sailing” along with a favorite quotation from Mae West, that my wife is fond of reciting: "When women go wrong, men go right after them."

After fishing Fu out of the drink, (all the young women had to dry him off and make a fuss), it turned out I knew the owner of the craft (a retired dentist). Being a good host I invited everyone on board for refreshment. The women sampled wine I had onboard (some bottles of Mouton Cadet 1996 and some open blush wines that are sweeter). For the “doc” and myself I got out a bottle of Ardbeg 17 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch and poured a glass for each of us. When you open the bottle you can smell its aroma across the room. IMO, the smell takes you to the hull of a ship docked off the coast of Islay; sea air, peat burning, leather and oak. Its story is sweet, warming and mellow. Ardbeg doesn't have an alcoholic bite that some other Islay malts do (IMO, it is the shape of the stills which cause this). Ardbeg is loaded with complex flavors and they blend together perfectly. 17 years of patience can’t always be wrong.

Since I knew for a fact that doc enjoyed “the leaf” and it being mid afternoon, I pulled out 2 Trinidad Fundadores Palma Largas and we torched them. The flavors of this smoke were initially grassy (like a Cohiba). The stick has a firm ash with coloring like dark charcoal mixed with a little gray. There were notes of citrus and flavors of wood, earthiness and a sweet spiciness. The last third of the smoke left my mouth feeling like it had a velvety smooth blanket in it. Our guests left (my cell phone did not ring. Thank the saints for that!). For all who have been to the equator, the sun doesn’t go down gradually. It hits the horizon and poof, it is twilight.

A pelican flew overhead. Fu looked at the pelican, then at me. He plopped his head in my lap and sighed; we watched the shrimp boats pull out from the docks and head into the twilight.

cian

Cian, you provide more substance in one post on this thread than probably all the posts I've made on the internet in the past five plus years. Another great story. Sounds to me like Fu has an eye for the ladies. Jumped right in the bay, huh?

:cryinlaugh: :cryinlaugh: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :cryinlaugh:

It doesn't sound to me like he can drown, though. Tell your wife not to worry, he was just trying to get a better look at the ummmm, "first mate" on the approaching ship. Also wanted to see if they were flying friendly colors. And as for Ethiopian coffee, I don't know if I'm repeating something I've said in the past, but since I discovered "real" coffee 14 years ago, various Ethiopians ascended rapidly to near the top of the heap of my favorites. Ethiopian coffee is as good as their distance runners, and since their distance runners are the best in the world, . . .

They have to be fast to catch their food.

Bloof, you hit the nail right on the head, cian 's posts do make me long for the lower latatudes , but I am not sure who is having more fun , Him or Fu !! , Cian glad you found the Sunday morning smoke postings you do bring out the Dawg in all of us, wishing we were watching the bikini boats right along side of you ! hahaha
Coffee , ahhh yes coffee: Ethiopian Yourgachef ( no thats not how to spell it BUT I am to lazy to get up & go look at the bag!) is one of my favorites , right up there with Santos, from Brazil, Kona & Columbian Supremo, as well as Kenya AA, but with its natural sweetness I like the Tanzanian Peaberry , I dont drink much Kona ( priced to dammmm high) but do make a pot on Sundays , I have been drinking a little Indian Malabar & some Verona Coffee from the Blue Violet coffee shop that is across the street from the cigar shop. ~
Good friends ,African Coffee & Cuban cigars along with great whisky from Scotland , food from the Mederterian area & long legged ladys from anyplce , a Beretta shot gun & a Colt .357 ,German Beer , all that is left is a Hassablat camera , & a Rolex watch, a Verchi tux & pair of custom made boots ,,,,, what more could you ask for ??? hahahaha ! oh yea a Rolls Royce & a BMW motorcycle, ( not that I am materialsitic or anything, ) well maybe a spell checker added to the list hahahaha ! Enjoy, Vince

Question guys ... Is the coffee that JR's sells any good? Any one ever had any? $8.95 / pound.

Where would you recommend buying coffee?

Good Evening Vince,
Today was Lamb day. I rubbed a boneless leg of lanb with a Greek rub (Oregano, Dill, Pepper, Sea Salt) and put it on the new grill. I actually stuck it on the Spit and spun it for 3 hrs until it was between MR and Med.
I had a couple of bottles of Retsina that was made at a Virginia Winery called Medeaterian Cellars. They taste just like they came from Greece.
The kids showed up at 5:00 so I blended up a couple of rounds of frozen strawberry Marg's. We had "Happy Hour" until the meat was ready. After dinner I had a RyJ Madeuro Churchill, It was good but not as good as the real thing.
I hope Mike pulls through. I wish him the best.
Next weekend is the annual Hall family Corn roast in Rogers, Ohio. We have it at the same time as my Dad's birthday. This year he will be 83. A bushel of sweet corn roasted in a pit of hot coals until it just starts to carmalize. There will be a bunch of great grand children running all over the place. We have a great time.

Oh, and don't forget folks, you can always go to the AmBack store right here, and pick up a couple kinds of coffee also.

Tom, the Lamb sounds just wonderful, The Greek Food fest starts Thursday , Nornily I would be there with my wife & Mike & his wife , the lamb there is fabulous, but since Mike is in the hospital, I will go & get a few things to go, freeze them & wait till Mike is better , then defrost everything & have our own Food fest, ahh the grape leaves, stuffed with rice & lamb, a little fresh lemon juice ~ HEAVEN
the eggplant is good & so is the spinich pie, , sure is going to be a long winter with him out of commision, no one to go hunting with, no one to call when the wife is in her "Moods" , dammmmm its tuff to see him in the hospital but I guess thats what friends are for , the good times & the bad! ,
Oh yes the coffee , man the coffee they make in a brass pot WOW, a shot of Ouzo a fine cigar what a way to end a meal !!! Enjoy, Vince

Looks like we made it through an other week here In the Burgh , a lot has happened since last posting, Uncle Fiedel came for a short visit & left 2 little packages for me , a Box of 10 Monte #1's & a bundle of coronas from Jose Piedro , so I have been starting my mornings with out the Don Carlos III that I would normally have but instead a machine made but it is Q-ban JP corona ., havent made up my mind what I like better, the DCIII lasts a little longer , but Both are fine for my morning drive to see Mike in the Hospital, he is back in the ICU, he pulled out his feeding tube from his stomach & started to bleed all over the place , one step fwd, 2 steps back.
My Grandson Chase had is first Piano recital yesterday , he played 17 Pieces , I got it all on tape so I can play it back in the car anytime I want , he is 9 been playing for 2 years, I dont think he is an other Mozart or ever will be he likes to play the classics but is better playing the Standards & swing . His little Brother Jonas (7) was the Usher & escorted every one to there seats , he wispered to me for a 5 he could seat me down front , the little con man ! hahaha, all the seats were down front hahaha !! I wonder who he is hanging out with when I am not there !!! ???
The wieght is comming off slow, but as of this morning I am down 170 from 417 , for you math challeneged I am at 247 , first time below 250 in about 20 years .
Gas is about 250 a gallon here , but so far it hasnt affected our Saturday & Sunday Night Cigar rides, with consevative driving I am getting over 20 MPG on my Sable , it had 110,000 + miles last I checked. still has the orginal spark plugs & wires , I hate to change them when it is running so good, I do change the oil & filter every 3 or 4 months , so far so good, other that tires ,brakes & a battery every thing was covered by warrenty, well it has expired , so I dont know what will be next !
Last Monday was my 35th. Anniversary , no big celebration or party, I bought here a Saphire pinky ring , a marques cut DEEP blue saphire that almost looks like Onyx it is so dark, but whenthe light hits it , BAM a blue flash of brilliance , she loved It & I got a few anniv. Cigars ( Padron anniv) , Yummy !!!
it is just a little after 11 AM here & I had a little tofu for breakfast & now I think I am ready for some Lunch , I know its early but I am getting that hunger urge , a Piece of cheese & a few Ritz Crackers should calm the growl in the gut, maybe a few cherry tomato's , got them comming out of my ears !!
I have no idea what I am going to make for supper tonight , when we have all the leftovers from the Greek food fest & I think it will just be what ever falls out of the Fridge tonight , no cooking , just reheat !!!
There is a Cigar Night at the Pirates game Monday Night , a $20 ticket gets you in the game & 3 cigars from General Cigar , about 300 of us were there for the last one, I have no idea who won , or who played the Pirates , WHO CARES , we were smoking & B.S.ing , trading cigars & enjoying our selves , they seat us all out in the left field area , UNDER the scoreboard, , Our job is to smoke enouth to block out the scoreboard !!!!!!
All I can add now , ITS TIME FOR A CIGAR !, Enjoy, Vince

I got it to keep her Happy ! what else whould I buy it for Duhhhh ! hahaha, it cost almost as much as a box of Cuban Monte #2's , to tell the truth, I would have rather spent the money on the cigars hahaha, but that would just Tick her off to no end, this way she is happy & I will smoke a few Piedro coronas instead ! hahaha
Enjoy, Vince
