I am doing rather well, I didnt have a cigar today & went to 2 different cigar shops, didnt buy anything , but I did have a good time looking at the stuff, , the coffee isnt as good tasting with out a cigar & the scotch , well its just fine ! hahaha, as soon as the insurence company oks the operation I am ready , then 2 months after to make sure all is healed , then CIGARS will be back on the diet ! Enjoy, Vince

I know what you can do with your hands, Vince. All those great recipes you've been talking about through the years, including desserts. Start working on them now, no pork or shellfish please, when done, flash freeze them and send them to me. I'll eat most of it, and send you cigars for when you can resume smoking. I'll also go into the food shipping business. You cook it, I'll distribute it. We'll be The Second Coming of Harry and David.

sounds like a great Idea BUT, How much are you going to eat & what will be left to ship out hahahaha????? Enjoy, Vince

You've got a really good point there. Talk about eating all the profits. By the way, I haven't opened it yet, but that box of Don Carlos robustos just came in, the one I asked you for advice about on the price. I also purchased a new digital hygrometer, since the other one had been dropped so many times being switched around the four desk tops, that it just plain broke. Can't wait to start sending out some packages. I couldn't pass up the chance for some Don Carlos, since they're usually so expensive. Thanks again for the advice. Keep us posted on Mike, and your own situation. Are you x'ing off the days on the calendar until you can smoke your next cigar?

I am trying not to think about how long it will be, I need to call the doc on Monday & see what days of the week he is in the hospital & what days he will operate on , then I get a date from the insurance company, but I am not looking for a callender yet, this is day 2 & things are going just fine, I took my daughter to Duquesne Univ. today to regester , she wants to be a Probation officer , & a dance major isnt going to cut it , so its back to school for more EDU> gladd I am not paying for it this time ! hahaha Enjoy, Vince

FuManchu and I rose early this morning, sneaking out of the house (after we raided the refrigerator); making our way down to Havensight harbor in the pre-dawn, before all the 1970s and 80s Chrysler and Chevy cabs and open top tour trucks begin to stream down to the ocean liner docks looking for business. We were careful not to wake Le Madame or my daughters, stopping long enough to make a sandwich, and a thermos of coffee (of course cigars were included (Fu does have problems as an assistant in food preparation; he is a “snacker” and tends to want to eat now and worry about later…later – we have discussed this several times, but it has not helped, to date.

Coffee on the boat this morning was Sumatran. IMO, this is a very full-bodied, concentrated coffee. The flavor is sweet, earthy and has gutsy richness. Sumatran is an Indonesian coffee grown by small farmers who may only have a few trees on their property, and they process coffee by the dry method, i.e., the ripe coffee cherries are pulped by hand and spread in the sun to dry rather than being rinsed (wet method) in water overnight. The net result of dry-processed coffee is a very heavy body and very full flavor. It's not the most refined or elegant coffee you can drink, but it has a “wake up and see the day” flavor and a nice foamy head in the cup. As an old Turkish proverb says: “Coffee should be black as hell, strong as death, and as sweet as love.”

My cigar: A Sancho Panza Belicoso (Vitola is Campana). For starters, this is not a beautiful cigar; a lot of veins on the wrapper and the construction on the cap (for a Cuban) was a little iffy, IMO. However, the draw was what you can expect from a good cigar: smooth and easy. When I torched the stick it instantly tasted of pepper, (and I mean a lot of pepper – Bloofington: IMO you would be safe to stand on the other side of a room with a Kleenex in one hand and a fire extinguisher in the other). After about a half inch, the pepper turned into creamy tastes of chocolate and vanilla. It took me about an hour and a half to finish this smoke. No relights were necessary.

My wife and I had a good trip to French Polynesia. IMO, people go there to live it up in stylish resorts (we stayed with friends), stuff themselves with French food prepared South Pacific style (I did that – just be sure to pack Pepto and mix it with your Scotch) and scuba dive with tons of tropical fish (I worked, Le Madame scuba'd). IMO, French Polynesia has become a tropical paradise myth for Europeans (probably Americans, too). Tahiti, for example is the biggest and most famous island, but most of the pictures you see in a travel agent’s books are most likely to be of some other French Polynesian island. The beaches are spectacular – especially the nude ones. I’ve always wondered why there are beaches with signs that say “Topless” or “Nude” but none that say “Bottomless”. My wife just glares and mutters under her breath when I bring it up (which I did at a dinner party while we were there). Life is full of unanswered questions.

After Fu and I admired the sunrise and watched smoke cuts rise up from the stacks of two liners at anchor in St. Thomas, we decided it was time for breakfast. I poured the last of the Sumatran into my thermos cup and divided the brown bread sandwich layered with mashed potatoes and potato chips in half and shared with my first mate. My wife, of course, would be furious if she knew about this, i.e., my blood pressure, and how bad it is for the dawg. But, to quote James Beard a well-known American Chef: “A gourmet who thinks of calories is like a tart who looks at her watch."

P.S. – Vince, my profound sympathies on your having to give up cigars for 3 months. As George Burns once said: “I smoke 10 to 15 cigars a day. At my age I have to hold on to something.”

Ahhhhhh, Sumatran Mandheling, one of my all-time favorite coffees, always will be. I don't think you'll ever be able to teach Fu about later. :cryinlaugh:

Good morning all, it is a wonderfull day here in the Burgh, day 3 of my ordeal but holing up well, I do have the Sunday morning Kona & it seams a bit flat with out the Don Carlos III , I stopped at the Frame shop & picked up a few cheep flames to make some cigar band collages , got to keep my hands busy & my prostraite can only produce so much , so I need to find some thing else to do with my hands hahahaha !
I had a great breakfast of tofu & banana fritters , the more off the wall I try to get the more uses for tofu I am finding , this stuff is great, ,,,, a good source of protene , easy to digest & almost no taste so it will go with just about anything, you can freeze it to change the texture, or use a silken style to get a softer finish , I like the firm or extra firm my self , it has a better feel in the mouth than the silken or soft tofu, , if you freeze the firm stuff then defrost it , it has the texture of Ham , I like to cut it a little on the thin side & grill it , add a little green tobasco & some hosin sauce, great stuff with eggs, or get the extra firm , dont freeze it cut it a little on the thick side, & grill it, then it will have a nice brown crusty outside & a creamy smooth inside , mixes well with a little peanut butter & garlic tabasco , there are all kind of ways to use this stuff, I have put it in Chili , used it in stuffing for a chicken , in soup, salads & omlets , I am going to try some in an Apple pie some day hahahaha !!!! Hey dont laugh it might be good who knows till you try !
Mike is getting along well the feeding tube to his stomach was removed Friday & he is eating well on his own, still a little antsy & wants to go home & have things the way they were , but You & I know that will never happen with out devine intervention . he is walking a few more steps than before & is able to stand in front of the toilet to take a leak, but still have an aiming problem, hey dont we all at one time or an other hahahaha !
the trees are starting to change colors & the leaves are starting to fall in the yard, looks like the grass cutting season is over , the raking will start soon & then the SHOVEL season will start, Cian , you lucky dog, living in the tropics you dont need a snow shovel !
Nothing special to cook today, chicken or meatloaf, , not crazy about either one right now, all I want is a second pot of Kona & a FINE HAVANA , hahahaha, No I dont , just kidding, sure it would be nice but what the doctor said is law here as far as cigars are cocerened , he is an occasional cigar smoker him self, just 1 or 2 a week, not like some of us Cigar Mavens like Sir Winston Churchill & George Burns who did 10 + a day , I was avargeing 5 at last count, my best day was 14 but 4 of them were petite coronas , last cigar crawl I was able to get 10 or 11 in , but there was a lot of drinking invloved , so it might have been more , it might have been less but I doubt it , I do remember waking up the next day with my mouth feeling like an ashtray , I still had the stump of an opus clinched between my teeth when I woke up hahahahahaha !
It is getting close to noon & I better get some supper started , what ever we are having , Enjoy, Vince

Tofu's great stuff. I eat it all kinds of ways. Of course, I don't do the prep like Vince, but I have it in a lot of foods that you can buy, like sandwiches, or the plastic containers with tofu pieces in a curry sauce, sweet and sour sauce, barbecue sauce, pieces of carrot, other things they put in there. They put pineapple squares in the sweet and sour tofu, but of courrrrrrrse.

Got a call from the Doc today, on the table on NOV. 17, 8 am should be able to have my next cigar in January or sooner if I am all healed up , went out for a quick walk around the local streets & scared a few dogs , they ran to the end of the chains & chocked them selves , looks like I will be going back again & take my high pitch battery powered horn, drives the dogs nuts , it is pitched to high for hunmans to hear , slips in the pocket & just pisses the big dogs off , the little ones hide , well I have been getting 2.5 miles every day & I wasnt home during the day today so I went later today, more dogs were out after supper than before lunch when I go most of the time.
I will pass on the Tofu apple pie , way to bland, I sliced granny smith apples & tofu together, spiced them up & made the pie, It needed More apples , the pie I made with all Zucchine was better & it had NO apples in it . , oh well maybe a zuchinne , apple & tofu pie hummmmm
Enjoy, Vince

when confronted by a BIG dog I always take on the Dominate role, & stair them down, puff my cigar at them , & blow smoke in there face if close enough, or I hit the button on my dog alarm, sends the little ones into hiding & the big ones just dont know what to do, working for the post office had its advantages , when I take my daily walk the dogs I pass are just doing there job that they were bread to do, they bark ! mans best friend no doubt , you dog never cares if you pet an other dog, your dog never cares if you toss a stick to an other dog, , you dog never cares if you come home late , your dog never cares if you come home with 1 can left in the 6 pack, try any of that with a wife or girl friend , hahahaha all H3LL will break loose ! Enjoy, Vince

HAHAHa I can just imagine what would happen if I tossed a stick and said "fetch" to a woman...

One black eye & 3 broken ribs later & I dont remember much after that ! hahahaha Enjoy, Vince

Thursday night update,
ONE WEEK today , no cigars ! , I am working at the shop Friday Morning 9 to 4, , I hope I can handle it, just keep the coffee cup full & stay busy, & stay OUT of the humidor if I can hahaha, I will be on the Operating table Nov.17 , & be tobacco free for 6 weeks after the operation also, or untill I am healed up with no chance of anything going wrong, hell I have come this far, might as well see it to the end ! , 170+ pounds are gone, walked 2.5 miles tonight in 32 minutes, not world class speed but 2 years ago I wasnt able to walk 200 yards with out stopping for a break !
Mike had his feeding tube removed from his stomach yesterday, he is getting a lot stronger & they have made some adjustments to his meds, still having trouble sleeping, but his room mate is old & deff, plays the TV so loud you can hear it in the parking lot, I got mike a set of Noise canceling head phones , they work fine but when he falls asleep with them on they slip off , oh well back to the drawing board !
the coffee is tasting crappy, the scotch lacks the luster it had before, Dammm I miss the tobacco ! hahaha Enjoy, Vince

Vince, and please everyone, I'm not talking about "heel and toe" walking here, but if you walked 2.5 miles in 32 minutes, that is VERY, VERY fast for walking that isn't deliberately done in emulation of the type performed in track and field, VERY fast, trust me. My absolute top walking speed on level ground is a 12 minute mile, a pace which I can keep up for quite a while, and there are few around who can keep up with me for ONE mile. Trust me, you walked that 2.5 miles VERY fast, and you're in great shape. Keep it up. Can't wait to hear some more progress. Go with The Lord.

Dammm I thought I was slow, 32 minutes for 2.5 miles , , I dont know thats about 8 minutes a mile , my heart rate is 55 at rest so I know I am doing some thing right , I want to get it down to 50 if I can, the slower it beats at rest the longer it will beat ( I hope) , I am headed to the shop this morning , running a little late, but better late than never hahaha Enjoy, Vince

Chilly & rain here in the burgh today, got a flu shot this morning, flu to fallow no doubt , just not feeling like my self this day, had a bad nights sleep, went to bed with a headache, work up with one hahahaha , headed to hinze Hall tonight for the 85th. anniv. of KDKA , the first commerical radio station in the world , got to get the shoes shined & re-tie the tie, the neck is a lot thinner now, dont want to trip over the tie hahaha ! Enjoy, Vince

No Vince, 32 minutes for 2.5 miles is 12 minutes and 48 seconds per mile. I can walk 2.5 miles in 30 minutes. Try again. :cryinlaugh: :neer: :rotflmao:

I've probably hit less than 12 minutes for my best mile, but overall, 12 minutes a mile is my basic top speed. That's really fast walking Vince, and if anyone in the world can walk eight minutes per mile, they're not far from being in the Olympics. I was talking about non-Olympic style walking. The 32 minutes you did for 2.5 miles is quite fast, as previously stated.

Also, a heart rate of 55 is "world class athlete" level, so you're definitely doing something right. Keep it up.

YES 13 to 14 minutes a mile is the pace I am after( 15 is good ) , 12 - 48 close enough for me , Math was never a strong suit for me , with the advantage of the pocket caculator, you still need to know what numbers get divided & what get added or maultiplyed ( Not to guod a speller too)
sitting here at the computer with my Sunday Kona , NO Don Carlos III , the coffee just isnt as good IMHO! , I havent been sleeping all that well in the past few days , waking up with a headache , I guess the lack of Nicotene is having its effects on me , I havent craved a smoke , but I want one, it isnt a physical dependence like Heroin, but I miss the Taste & Aroma , & I have found out second hand smoke just dont cut it , my shoulders ache & I am constapated, Dammm its hell getting old ! BUT it beats the alternative hahaha .
Went to the KDKA 85th. anniv. last night , had a great time, one of the Guys I worked with at the post office was there with his wife & he was able to pick me out of the crowd, now since I have lost 170+ pounds he wasnt sure till I opened my mouth & he heard the voice , it hasnt changed , still the rich full radio announcers voice that I have had since puberty ~~ thats about all I got from puberty, I all ready had hair growing in my ears haha
On todays menu is stuffed chicken breast , a boneless skinless breast stuffed with cheese & Brocolli , rolled in a seasoned flour browned in a little extra virigin olive oil, topped with a compound butter & finished in the oven , roasted garlic polinta & some flat green beans with red bell peppers should do the trick , might even pull the cork on a bottle of Pinot Grigio, I think I have a bottle of the Santa Marghetta Alto stashed some place , it should go well with the chicken , hey if I am lucky there will be more than one bottle left & I can have a few more sips after dinner hahaha !
it is turning into a wonderfull day here inthe Burgh, all rainy yesterday, but the sun is out & the birds are singing, it is a little cooler now but it is Oct.23rd it isnt going to stay 80F all winter here in da Burgh , the trees are getting a nice color & soon it will be time to get out the rake & clean up all the leaves & have a nice fire , burning up all the fallen leaves 7 all the tree limbs that were cut off & broken over the summer, time to roast a few hot dogs on a stick & toast some marshmellows , sip warm apple cider out of a tin cup & burn you lip on the cup ! I do it evey year & I dont think this one will be any different hahahaha !
The cows are out in the field this morning , but they dont look as happy as they did before Ole Angus McStud was sold , he might be gone , but the little ones are still showing up every few months , lots of seed left in the freezer !!!!
I need to put on a second pot of coffee, looks like I am going to make some Columbian or Kenya , the Kona just isnt tasting as good with out a fine cigar, so why spend the money for the Kona & not enjoy it , when I can Not enjoy the Columbian at half the price ! hahaha Enjoy, Vince
