The Matrix?
Seeing that cigars compliment a round of golf, I was just wondering how many here actually play golf.

I've been playing for 7 1/2 months now. I got into golf because of work. Well, not really related to work, but my coworkers hold a tournament every year. I went to hit my first golf ball in December of last year when everyone went to practice for the tournament. I was frustrated during the 30 minutes as I was only able to hit about 5 out of 30 balls. Of course, none of them went straight.

After the tournament, everyone came back to work with all the war stories and the "I caught a fish THIS BIG" tales.

So in March '06, I decided to get myself a set of clubs. Since I'm a beginner, I ended up getting the Jack Nicklaus Signature Series from Costco. It included a mallet putter, 5-PW steel shaft irons, 3H, 4H, 3 and 5 wood, 460cc driver, and a stand bag. All regular flex shafts. (you can find this set at costco's web site)

My handicap is too embarassing to mention in public.

Since then, I've decided it was time to move on to a new set of clubs.

What's in my bag now:
Nike Sasquatch 460cc driver (this thing looks HUGE)
Callaway Big Bertha Titanium 7-wood
Callaway X 4-hybrid (as soon as it's released this week)
Callaway Big Bertha '06 irons: 5-PW (graphite shaft)
F2 (Face Forward) wedge: 52 degree
Professional Open 56 degree wedge, brass head (homemade by a co-worker)
Putter: can't remember the brand at the moment. Got it off my friend.
Ball: currently using Precept Laddie Extreme. Will be using Callaway HX Tour 56 as soon as I have the chance to get back out on the course (got 12 of these during a Callaway Demo event)

Other balls I've used:
Nike Ignite: this ball is like hitting a solid lead rock! I hated it after 2 holes. Donated the rest on the driving range.
Callaway HX Pearl: nice and shiny pearlescent coating (yeah, it's actually made for women  ). Good distance off the tee, nice spin on the short game. Consistent on the green. But was too expensive as I lost 10 of these on just 1 course!
Callaway Warbird: not too crazy about this ball
Titlelist NXT: didn't like these either. Can't remember why.
Top Flite XL Extreme Distance

My strategy for golf: HAVE A GOOD TIME and SMOKE A CIGAR! Some people I play with take the game too seriously. And I see it affecting their game. For me, I go just to have fun and enjoy the scenery. Sure, the squirrels love to steal my snacks out of my bag, but that's another story. So what if my round ends up at 140+. At least I enjoyed a lot of cigars! :D

So, what's in your bag? Why do you golf? Tips/Tricks? Your fishing tales?

excellent thread idea Doc

I've been playing golf for the last 5 years, but only seriously for the last 1 1/2 years. My handicap isn't that great, but I'm like you, I go out and try to have a good time, smoke a few cigars, and chat with the girl that drives the beer cart. On a good day I can break 100. I can't putt for my life and thats what tends to wreck my scores.

I recently inherited my fathers Adam's Tight Lies woods and I love them. My drive is so much straighter. I always had the power but not always the direction. The odyssey rossie 2 putter was also a recent addition to my bag. It seems to be helping me learn some touch when it comes to putting.

I've played a fair number of courses in both north and south jersey, and one recently here in west virginia.

My #1 golf tip: when you are starting to lose your drive, and struggle, its time to refuel. My personal fuel is a Michelobe Ultra thrown down before the next tee box. Guaranteed to straighten out your next drive.

I have been known to hit the course on occasion, I know that's a shocker. Been playing for over 10 years now - the last year I broke down and joined a CC with my business partner. My handicap is 14 - I would really like to work on dropping that next year.

In my bag:

Driver - Taylormade 580XD
Fairway wood - Nike 5 wood T4
Taylormade rescue iron dual 19 degree loft
Putter - Odyssey White Hot
Irons - 3 through Wedge - King Cobra SS-1 Steel shaft
Wedges - Sand - Cleveland Tour Action 588
Gap - Cleveland Tour Action 900

I pulled my 3 wood out so that I could have the rescue iron and the extra wedge.

Balls I like to use:

Callaway Warbird - for a cheap ball I like the way it feels.
Pinnacle Extreme - another lower cost ball.
Callaway Tour - very pricey but when I get them as a freebie they are my favorites!
Titleist HP Tour - mid priced - hard to find.

One tip I can add is to always have a putter in your hand when you have free time. I will putt in the office while I am on the phone. Drive for dough, putt for show.

Most important tip - GET A CIGAR MINDER - to clip on the cart. Don't want to keep putting down the cigar - especially with all of the pesticides and fertilizers on the course!

Last tip - GRIP and RIP! Have fun on the course. If it wasn't for having to post a score for a handicap I wouldn't even bring a scorecard. I like to laugh my butt off. [/i]

My handicap is that I am still standing to close to the ball after I hit it!!! Or I could say that it is having a short ... and bad breath!!

Actually I am just a hacker, but love to get on the course when I can. Unfortunately with 2 young chidren and a job that requires alot of work, it is in-frequent!

I have found that if you were to go buy all the gadgets that tout taking strokes off your score, you should be able to shoot scores in the negatives. Just like with guns, it is more of a software issue than a hardware issue to play good golf. To a non-professional level player, the difference between all these things on the market are negligible! One time, Lee Trevino won a bet by playing and beating a guy using a POP BOTTTLE instead of a club! I would lay money on Tiger Woods beating anyone on here using Wal Mart Cheapo clubs and the cheapest ball you can find.

I use a 8 yr old set of Calloway Graphite Shafted Irons and a mixture of different woods.

People laugh when they see me playing because I have trouble seeing white golf balls on the course, so I use the NEON orange balls that they do not even sell on the market anymore.

My saying goes like: It ain't the golfer, it's the clubs!

I think my driver is defective or something. I can't hit it even if my life depended on it. Maybe I need a 600cc driver. I've even tried to change the batteries in it, but can't find the compartment. Batteries not included? Bah-humbug! I'm better off teeing with my putter.

And another thing...
I think water hazards and tree lines have some sort of magnetic golf field. My golf balls are ALWAYS attracted to it. And what's up with outlining the greens with sand bunkers?! C'mon now! If I wanted to go to the beach, why would I be golfing? argh!

This game is so frustrating, I'm addicted to it!

kelvin, and anyone else with a rescue wedge

how do u like them, I was thinking about getting one, especially for use out of the rough. I was reading that they can be used for chipping too, and off the tee obviously. What scenarios do you find yourself using it in? and is it worth removing my 3 wood for.

I've never used them around the green (my partner uses his driver around the green sometimes - don't know how the heck he uses it!) - but it is much better out of the rough than a 5 wood. If I use it from the fairway when I am about 200 yds out - and any time I am 190+ in the rough.

If you are ever up in Jersey and the weather is warm - let me know! I would be happy to let you try out the rescue wood/iron. Got a good price on it - I will try and remember where. The feel on that club is great - it feels like you are swinging an iron.

My problem with the 3 wood is that I am not that much more accurate with my 3 wood than I am with my driver - I can be wild with both! I am toying with working on it off the carpet - I usually get 210 to 215 with a 5 wood - I would like to see how I would do with my 3 wood.

I've been playing for around 16 years or so. Back when I used to play regularly, my handicap got down to the 11-12 range. But for the past 4 years I haven't been able to get out as much and my scores have shot up.

This is one game you have to play and work at alot if you want to improve or have any kind of consistency. Since I don't have the time for that anymore, I just go out to have fun, smoke a couple of cigars and have a few beverages. I actually think I'm enjoying it more now than back when I was playing more and scoring lower.

I've been using the same clubs for quite some time. I can't remember that last time I bought new golf equipement.

In the bag right now:

A Taylor-Made Ti-2 driver
Tommy Armour 845 irons (4-9, PW, SW)
Home-made 3-wood, 5-wood and 7-wood
Wilson putter that I won in a golf outing 14 years ago.

I don't buy expensive golf balls. There's nothing worse than dumping a $3-$4 ball (or 2) in the lake.

The one bit of advice I would offer to a newer golfer is don't spend a fortune on equipment. You can't buy a good golf game. That will only come with a lot of practice and playing many rounds.

And above all, enjoy yourself on the course!!!

i think im the only person on this forum that does not play golf.

Kuzi, I think you are right about that one.

I started playing about 20 years or so ago, and for a while was able to get out at least once or twice a month. Then kids came along, and daddy was needed at home. It is pretty pathetic, I only went a couple of times last year, and not even once this year, but I do still enjoy banging a ball around when I get the chance.

My clubs are Golden Bears that I bought at a garage sale from a friend a few years ago. He was a salesmen, and they were a sample set still in the plastic. I picked up a putter, and just use the best ball I can find in the bottom of my bag.

Having fun is the key, I never take it seriously, and always enjoy the walk. We were playing at my favorite course last year, and we saw a badger digging out gophers in the rough. We saw him abour an hour later, he was so full, his belly was just about dragging on the ground - it was hilarious!!

There you go, that is my golf story!!

Sandy: Carl I want you to kill all the gophers on the golf course

Carl: Correct me if I'm wrong Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers they'll lock me up and throw away the key.

Sandy: Not golfers, you great fool. Gophers. The *little* *brown*, *furry* *rodents*.

Carl: We can do that. We don't even need a reason.

Kuzi, my brother, you are notthe only non-golfer in the bunch.
Oh, I tried it a long time ago(some of these guys were still in diapers back then) but I never caught the bug. I've got an old set of clubs buried out in the garage somewhere just to prove i tried it.
Nowa days I'd rather stick to the smokin cigars part.

You forgot the best one:

Carl: It's not my fault I can't understand you you fuzzy little foreigner

And I like to play a little myself. When I was in high school I used to play all the time and my handicap was a 16, which wasn't good enough to be on the school team but was good enough to look competent out there. Life has sort of gotten in the way over the last few years and I only get out a few times a year now, but I hope that changes in the next little while. I have a set of ping eye 2 irons that are hand-me-downs from my dad.

Alright, so I combined a couple there inadvertently, but it was good-intentioned 8)

My "golf game" is sporting clays. I hate golf, and don't have the patience to play. If it doesn't involve firearms, I don't want to play.

But Capt, it involves a lot of cigars, good company, and beer cart girls!

You can do the same thing with guns. Plus you have the added bonus of Guns. :D
