Gigantic blasts in the Northeast yesterday, killing four people, three in upstate New York. Hundreds of thousands of people still without power in the central and western parts of the state. A gust of 77 mph at Rochester Airport. I had two small gutter guard panels knocked out of place in the back of the house. Not a big problem compared with people dying and real tragedies, but I'm afraid of heights, and won't go up on the ladder to fix it. Sooooooooooooooo, with succeeding snow and rain storms, if I don't get a friend over soon, it could be . . .

:flush: :flush: :flush:

a big, house damaging problem what with all the twigs and pine needles that will end up in there. :duh: :duh: :duh:

So I was out in the garage. I pulled open the drawer of my work bench looking for some duct tape. I spotted a Padron. About 5 inches long and I'd say a ring size of 47. This cigar has to have been in the drawer for at least 4 years. Still in the cello. I pinched it and found it to be ok. A few hard spots but basicly fine. I put it in my humi for 6 weeks. I couldn't wait any longer so I pulled it a out and fired it up. OMG! In all that time and abuse this cigar turned out to be perfect. Of course now I wish I had left it in the humi for a while longer. Always greener on the other side LOL. Any way I'm gonna buy a box of these and store them for a couple of years in the proper condition and see how they turn out. I am going to smoke one every 6 months and try to detect the aging process. This is a very fun hobby and now I even have a quest. :D

A fun hobby indeed, and a fortuitous find. That once happened to me with a Fuente Candela Churchill that Michaelsean had sent to me. I never found it in a box of cigars he sent me. One day, by accident, while tearing up cardboard and straightening out the garage, heyyyyyyyyyy, I wonder if this is the cigar Mike told me for sure he knew was in that box he sent me. After five months in a very cold garage and through a really bad winter, it all worked out in the end.

There was a time when I didnt smoke a cigar untill it was in my Humi 2 years, I had a back log of cigars the cigar shop down the street would have been proud of , But alas I sold off about 10.5K sticks & all of the older stuff but a few from my wedding back in 1970. So that left me with a BUNCH of empty humidors, but the collection is growning again, ever so slowly & the cost today is so much higher than it was 35 years ago! & 35 years ago I had a great well paying JOB, today, not so well paying, I am making less now that I did when I was first married, But now I dont pay rent on an apartment, My home is paid for , & now my Grandsons are bugging me to do things, & 35 years ago I didnt have any children let alone grandchildern !
Cigar smoking is a great "HOBY" & it is a great Life style also !

Enjoy, Vince

It has been a strange week weather wise here in the Burgh, 60+ on Monday, dipped to 3 F last night, but a wonderful clear sky with lots of stars to look at , but to dammmm cold to stay out very long, a mug of coffee & a small cigar were all I could take, a small Piqueno , not much bigger than a cigerette , took all of 8 minutes to smoke & by then the coffee was cold & so was I . None the less the sky was beautiful, I was going to sit in the Qtr.deck & watch the sky through the skylight but it is a small opening & I wanted to see it ALL. , Didnt see any shooting stars or planes last night , nothing in the sky but stars . My wife was in the house watching the rerun of the Thornbirds for the umpteenth time , a love story between a young girl & a Priest, back in the early 1920/30's in Australia , well at lest it wasnt a young boy ! So when she was watching TV , I was outside as not to disturb her , good thing, she stayed up till God knows when to watch this BS & I went to bed , got a great nights sleep & woke up this morning to make Peach Blintzes for breatfast , along with a 12 cup pot of Kona , & I am finishing it right now , wow we have made it up to 9F all ready, it was 5 when i got up we hit 3 over night, I hope you all got your brass monkeys in last night !hahahaha
I was the M.C at our Saturday luncheon , we had a local TV personality http://www.CharleyGodart.TV as the entertainment, he started off with a great FAT Elvis, I cant see my blue suede shoes & then entertained as Elvis for about 20/25 minutes , did a quick change into Jake Blues of the Blues Brothers, his son who is most often playing the part of Ellwood wasnt able to make th show so Charley got some on out of the crowd to play Ellwood , a 70 year old retired banjo playing air traffic controller who damced up a storm as Ellwood, he had all the moves of a young Dan Akroid , I will put up a box of Cuban Monte #2's that he is a hurting puppy today , dammmm thats the most movement I have seen out of this guy since I have known him !!!
Just got an email from him as I was typing this, & I was right, he is one sore & tired Puppy , well old dog this morning hahahahaa
With no imagination going for me this week I tossed a small beef roast in the oven this morning , it is my wifes favorite so I never get a complaint from her when i make it, but I would rather have some thing else but to keep her happy......... maybe next Sunday I can make a chicken or a pork roast, or anything different , it has ben a long time since I did anything with veal , maybe next Sunday.
I pulled the cork on a nice red wine to have with the beef today , it is resting in a decanter & should be all settled this afternoon a vintage 1986 Chanti that I made. I didnt even know I had it till this past week when I was doing a little clean up of the wine cellar , & there it was stuck in a rack with a few 02 whites that didnt have a great bouquet & had a little bit of a flat taste, I was going to make the brandy out of it till I got rid of the still , but I did find this great old red & no matter how boring todays pot roast will be the wine will kick @$$ , it was great last time we drank it about 2 years ago & I thought it was all gone, I bet my brother hid this one bottle & forgot about it ! hahaha to bad for him I have it now !
I dont think My Mother in law will be able to live on her own to much longer , he older sister passed away this week ( just 2 of them left out of 11) & she is the youngest, well at the Funeral she asked my wife who the girl in the burgandy dress wes, it was my wifes only sister & her daugher , we all have seen the decline in her since the old man went a few years ago , dammm I do miss the old Pain in the @$$ , I used to talk about him on the air all the time, he provided a lot of material, some people called in & told me I shouldnt talk about him like that, but he loved ever second of it, & then after he passed away I still talked bad about him & I got flack from the same old ladys for talking ill of the dead , , dammmm you can please some of the people anytime ! But they still listened so thats all that mattered, I got the ratings & that my friends is what paid the bills .
I got my first pay check from my new job at Tabacelira Tropical, , Not a kings ransome but almost enough to get a tank of Gas hahaha, which is almost a kings ransome now days ! My natural gas & electric went up 75 bucks over last month alone , right now gasoline is about 2.30 a gallon, & my Sable is giving me about 20/22 MPG if I dont pretend I am Richard Petty or Jacky Stewart . I am going up North to Erie Pa this comming Friday to do a small taste test at a shop there for Tropical , right in the heart of the snow belt , the wind shoots across the lake & picks up all the moisture & DUMPS it on the ground in the form of snow , not as bad as it gets in Buffalow NY , but not much better ! so I have a few buddys going with me to help dig out if we get stuck in a snow drift hahahaha ! & to smoke cigars & drink coffee with, NO Scotch when I am driving, dont want to spill any of it !
I am out of Kona ( in the pot & my Cup) so I am going to make a pot of Margoheppie that my wife just ground, then off to the Qtr.deck to hook up the new 5 inch TV my wife got for me to put out there , a BIG SCREEN(LOL) 5 Inch Black & White TV, , it was a big dent in the wallet, under 20 bucks & it has an AM/FM radio built in , gee I wonder if I can find some thing strong enough to mount it on the wall ! hahahahaha , it is so big & heavy hahahahaha, but NO REMOTE CONTROL, so it will need to be close so I can change the stations & adjust the Vol. , , well it looks like it will just sit in the end table at arms reach hahahaha ! Thats good now I dont have to figure out the placements of the wall studds to nail into.
I didnt hit the 365 Million on the power ball so I will still be here posting & lamenting my poor picking of the numbers for the Powerball drawing . In the stolen words of the Soup Natzi , NO CIGARS FOR YOU !
hahahaha Enjoy, Vince

It has been cold here too, Vince. it was about 1 degree when I left the house yesterday morning, and thankfully has warmed up to a toasty 17 so far today. I was out late lastnight playing cards at a friend's house, so I relished the chance to sleep in this morning. Due to my late start I did not have the chance for a morning cigar, but have a Monte #4 planned for a little later this afternoon. This gift to me has been sleeping for a few weeks, and has been calling to me from the humi for several days now... I am really looking forward to it. Just finishing a pot of leftover beans from a few different kinds of coffee this morning. Mostly Columbian Supremo with a little left over Tanzanian Peaberry and a Guatamalan something or other thrown in. Ended up being a very nice cup. So far Wallace and I have just been lazing around the house, but I think it is time to get some things done, so I will leave you now. I will check back to see what friend Cian has to say... envious of his weather right now for sure!
Take care

Le Madame (and daughters) are vacationing on the island of St. Kitts (joining family members who are European snow birds for their annual trek to some place warm: the golden Caribbean). Since FuManChu, my golden retriever and I stayed home, (business for me, dawg biz for Fu), we will miss out on the endless intrigue between Adrienne and her sisters (3 of them) while they flounce, pout and compete with each other. As my favorite slightly cracked Irish philosopher Emo Philips would say about the proceedings: “My mom was a ventriloquist and she always was throwing her voice. For ten years I thought the dog was telling me to kill my father."

Coffee: I brewed Aloha Island Kona-Pod, which uses beans from private estate plantations, rather than mixed lots. This gives the coffee a dependable consistency. The beans are picked and processed by hand and roasted in small batches. IMO, Kona coffees have a singular taste, similar to the way 100% Columbian does. The brew smells very aromatic with a dark caramel coloring, and a beautiful cream texture. There is some acidity, but no bitterness. The beans are ground to a fine consistency and well roasted producing espresso-like coffee. IMO, the coffee has the bold complexity of true espresso, but contains more character than dark roast Kona. Since I like coffee strong and fresh, this is not quite espresso but it is wonderful to wake-up to for a first cup in the morning.

Cigars: Partagas Seleccion Privada No 1 (the vitola is Daliea): a sweet, earthy, cedar stick with a long burn and great draw. IMO, the PSP#1 is full bodied, burns evenly and has a great aroma: notes of espresso, cocoa, and exotic spices. Pre-lit, it smells sweet and spicy. Just the opposite is true after torching the stick: strong and powerful with a warm woody Habano taste, but not overpowering (there being that sweet, toasted cedar flavor in the last third).

Fu and I made for the harbor first thing to straighten up on the boat since friends were joining us for a day of reflection and ease. Fu was assigned to dusting (he has a wonderful tail and once he understands his role, does so with great relish). I take care of the little thing: making sure cigars, long stemmed matches and cold drinks are available, empties are discretely hidden or tossed and jazz is ready to be played. Before you could say ‘Ask not for whom the bell tolls, let the machine get it’, my companero and I were ready to get down to the serious business of doing as little as possible.

According to Le Madame this is a “lost day” i.e, a day of cigars, single malt scotch, more cigars, cruzon rum, more cigars, barbecuing fresh fish and of course, cigars. (Le Madame always adds that this assumes none of us (especially me) fall overboard and drown). Since I have heard this many times from my wife, I defer to Dylan Thomas’ philosophy on reflection and ease: "An alcoholic is anyone you don't like, who drinks more than you do."

Among our smokes was a box of Nicaraguan cigars from the casino party a few weeks back. We sampled some made by Jose Alonso. These were Toros, having an unusual flavor both spicy and sweet and with a flower flower-like aroma. The filler was pure Cuban-Seed Habano tobacco, hand blended with a very nice binder and wrapper (old style as the grower told us, meaning a long curly top with the foot wrapped over and not uncovered, as growers rolled for themselves, in old Cuba). The draw was easy, resulting in big clouds of smoke and the tobacco flavor was very good. Nicaraguans, these days, are arguably making some very fine smokes.

And so, we passed a pleasant February afternoon (sans wives), enjoying the sun, hooting at the bikinis swooping by on jet skis and power boats, egging Fu on as he became a one dawg police force that chased seagulls, water birds and the evil pelicans (I am sure Fu is convinced that they are from a dark side of life), cheering when he came racing back, voicing his joy and pride like an Irish beat cop at the turn of the century in Dunderry.

I think therefore, that David Berkowitz must've read Emo Phillips.

As for that coffee, Cian, being familiar with Hawaiian Kona purchased from Green Mountain and Oren's, good quality, but certainly not as special as yours, nonetheless, I detect the typical Kona qualities in your description. Yes indeed, one of the best morning coffees, especially if you're looking to get a well focused, rip roaring start.

And again, Cian and I agree wholeheartedly on the Nicaraguan thingy.

Brenda, that line of Vince's cracked me up, too.

I really enjoy reading the Sunday thread. Thank you to all who post.

cian, you should think about posting in the coffee forum. You would make a great contribution to a sometimes lonely forum. Have a great Sunday, everyone!

well it is almost 10pm here in the burgh, I had a great time reading the posts here & there & just came to realize , I am still in my Pajamas from this morning, I never went out side all day but to get the paper out of the box at the end of the drive way, never got out to the Qtr.Deck to have a cigar , never did much of anything but sit on my formerly fat Butt & do nothing all day, I did cook & have a bite to eat, I did drink a LOT of coffee today , this is pot #5 , decalf ! as was #4, & beside drink coffee & get rid of the coffee , thats about all I have done today , Dammmm it felt Great , Now I very seldom have pajamas on when I go to bed , I just slip on the bottoms when I get up to go to the bathroom & grab a shirt or the pajama top & make breakfast, well I never got back to the bedroom to change again today , dammm How did I do that?? no cigar, all day, I missed my Don Carlos this morning, dammmm that is going to through the count all off, I might need to smoke 2 of them Monday morning to get back on track ! good thing I am not anil retentive like my wife, this would give her a stroke ! hahahaha , I went back & read my post from earlier today, & I thought I had missed some thing, so I re read it a third & forth time, then I noticed , NO CIGAR REPORT ! , dammmm no cigar HOW DID I DO THAT ????? , well I didnt have a cigar this morning thats how , dammmmmmm!
Oh well better luck next Sunday , hahaha Enjoy, Vince

ahhh...I spent the day sunday making and eating a big pot of homemade chicken soup...it was good....invited the mom and sister over. Went up to the he-man club to replenish my wood supply for the fire place and smoked an AF exquisito maduro...those little things get real good about halfway down...
After the mom left I went into the garage for an evening cigar....then I went to bed.

I think the wife is starting her annual winter volleyball league on Wednesday, so it might mean a trip to the Quarter deck wed. evening...
