GOOD MORNING CIGAR SMOKERS ! Well I made it back home in time to post before noon, didn't know how late I was going to be getting home this morning The Blue Violet Café ( the coffee shop across from the Cigar shop ) is now serving Brunch buffet on Sundays, and today was the first day, well , I just had to be the first one in line to mess with the minds of the help ! & I got there just as they unlocked the doors , with my Wife Barb at my side, ( to keep me from going wild on all the food ) our first buffet since the Major weight loss ! , Maria ( the owner of the BV) met us when we got inside & told the help to keep the fingers out of my line of fire , Knowing all to well what damage I can do , well could do in my past. I was reserved, I took a few Valium before we left the house to make sure I didn't get a BUZZ on food hahahaha , & not drink shots of Tabasco with my omelet ! hahahaha , well since it was the first day & they were running a little behind, that just gave me an excuse to hep ! , so I grabbed a french chefs knife & started to cut peppers & onions for the omelet's , the mushrooms were sliced & the sausage was cooked & the batter for the waffles was ready, the stem table had scrambled eggs, hash brown potatoes, ham, bacon , & sausage , along with hot Biscuits & sausage gravy, there were hot & cold pastries & the assorted juices & milk, Brazilian Santos coffee, Louie the XIII coffee & a golden Pecan coffee & some decaf , a bunch of teas that they always have BUT NO KONA , how can it be Sunday with out KONA ?????
I was sane about my trip past the buffet, you notice I said PAST the buffet , yep I did it walked right past it to the omelet station , got a 1 egg omelet, peppers & sausage with a little cheese on top, , No toast, nothing extra, Barb had a strawberry Waffle & we both had a mug of Santos , ( I have the KONA brewing as I type)
& that was all ! I am glad I was able to help out , it took some of the stress away of passing up the buffet ! I don't know if the help like the way I took over the prep work, but they didn't have the foggiest idea of what needed done, Maison Plas ( SP) have everything ready & in dishes ready to go, all the work is in the prep, So I was able to give guidance where it was needed, the owner was in the down stairs kitchen baking for a wedding reception at 6 PM today, & the young lady setting up the Buffet was LOST in her own mind, she has been there a few months , making coffee & cleaning up the place, but was not ready to do anything like cook for the public, the girl making the omelets & waffles had never done anything like this before & was not ready, , they should have had a dress rehearsal for this ! Or not been planing a wedding on the same day ! They have done Buffets before, but never breakfast, & this was just to much for the hard working but lacking in experience crew. , They are rolling along fine now , & NO I will not be working there next Sunday !
(maybe Saturday night to do the prep) hahahaha
So that was this morning, I have a New Cuba Robusto sitting in the Qtr.Deck that I started on the way home from the BV, its OK but I miss my Don Carlos III & my Kona, as soon as I finish posting this morning , I will take care of that problem asap !
I have a nice Beef steak for the Boss & my self to split today, , looks like the grill fill see some fire, it is 38F right now here in Da Burgh the sun is out & a few clouds in a Beautiful Blue sky,
I will have the day to myself, Barb & her sister are leaving to go to the craft store, for what I have no idea, but I will be sitting in the Qtr.Deck sipping Kona & smoking all day till it is time to fire up the grill, about 4:30 & we can eat about 5 if she is home by then, By 6 Pm I hope to be back in the Qtr.Deck with a BIG Dbl Corona or an "A" & a WEEE DRAM hahahaha , who's with me ?? how about an Amen form Fu ? hahaha
I didnt get a bunch done this week, thursady was a real bummer, I had a sinus headache all day & at 4:30 I took a pill, at 5:30 I told Barb I was going to lay down a little bit, weel I woke up at 4:30 AM ! had to drain the old crank case, dammmm I slept 11 hours, well I got up did what woke me , had a sip of water & went back to bed, & slept till NOON on Friday, , I dont know what was in the sinus pill but I am glad I didnt have to drive any place, wowowow it kicked my formerly fat @$$ all over the place , glad I didnt take 2 of them ! , well I was fine to go to the cigar shop Friday night ! hahahaha
I had Lunch Saturday with a few friends & did my best to smoke a few cigars ( what else would one do on a Saturday ) as we all did , & my Nephew & 2 of his buddys stopped by the Qtr.deck last night for a smoke, it is funny to watch an 18 YO kid with his first real cigar , not a havatampa !!!, my nephew has been smoking cigars with his father on the golf course for about 4 years now, ( just to keep the bugs away) & he is hitting them well ( golf not the smokes ) he is the lead off man on his HS golf team. shoots in the mid 70's for 18, is now beating his father all the time, some thing that isnt setting well for my Brother in Law hahahahaha
Dammm I took a coffee break & missed posting before Noon well it is a Sunday Afternoon smoke instead of a Sunday Morning smoke , the Kona is wonderful & the Don Carlos is ready to cut, so I better get off the computer & get to things that NEED to be done !!!

Enjoy , Vince

Sounds like a wondeful day you have planned, Vince. This morning I had to run into the office to get some tracking info on some packages I sent out and when I got back it was already shaping up to be a beautiful day. We got some well needed rain last night, and now the clouds are moving out and the sun is shining. It is about 54 degrees and I am loving life! I enjoyed a Punch Gran Puro Rancho while sipping a cup of Bolivian coffee I got from Kelvin in our receint coffee pass...Wonderful coffee! As I looked around the yard I noticed the Forsithias (SP) are beginning to develop their little buds on them, and if this weather holds, I expect next Sunday's coffee and smoke will be welcomed by a profusion of yellow blossoms. I just love spring! All the plants starting to wake up from their long winter's nap... Cheers to all of you, I hope you enjoy what is left of your weekend! :wine:

Traveling for business this week, I took a seaplane as far as San Juan, Puerto Rico, transferring to a prop-jet going to Port-of-Spain (Trinidad and Tobago), which connected to Caracas and hence to Maracaibo, Venezuela, a town famous for pirates, fine cigars, cellars of port and old men. In times gone by, this area of the Americas was known as a ‘gold coast’, partly because of its position of commerce and wealth to the rest of the Spanish empire and an unsurpassed lush beauty consisting of hidden harbors, beautiful women and a coast line of eternal sunshine and perfect waves; finishing with that slight sense of menace and malice that is called old world charm.

It is one of the last outposts where men are themselves, for better or worse. As Emo Phillips (my favorite slightly cracked Irish philosopher) notes: “It’s great to be a man because you can go to the bathroom without a support group, sex means never worrying about your reputation and your underwear is $10 for a three pack.”

After business was concluded, our host led us into his study done entirely in old Honduran Mahogany, for cigars and drinks. Cigar: Partagas Lusitanias (vitola is Prominente). IMO, the stick has a wonderful pre-lit aroma, which only gets better. Once torched you can ‘feel’ the strong taste. This is one of the big ‘Habanos’: a perfect burn, great ash and fine construction (It is a Partagas after all); IMO, a 2-hour smoke. Like most Cuban cigars it has that prized complexity that changes several times during the course of a smoke. Notes of wood and leather flow into sweetness, building to a citrus, grass and oats flavor; the road home (final third) a wild dash of rich spice, and huge clouds of smoke.

Since all present (the women of the house had fled) were old men (we all could remember Nixon, and Castro when he was young and still smoked cigars – he quit in ’85 – medical reasons), our host served a Sandeman 40 year old Tawny Port. Tawny Port is aged a long time in wooden barrels, spending 3 or 4 years in casks. They lose much of their fruit and the normal deep red color becomes amber (which gives the wine its name) and acquires a nutty character.

This is a very ‘eye appealing’ port wine; amber waves of grape that are a subdued gold when reflected in afternoon sunshine. IMO, it is very well developed, with great balance; soft, elegant fruit flavors and a nice nutty after taste that creates a smooth finish that lingers on your tongue. Soothing for old men on long golden afternoons, wondering how the morning of youth went so quickly.

There is an old African fable, I once heard, that applies to young and old alike:

“Every morning in Africa, a gazelle awakens. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest Gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better be running.”

Check out what Cian says here. I might as well be longwinded tonight, since the firm has requested that I not appear on stage this morning. Well, I got 7.5 hours last night, so at least I didn't pitch a shutout this weekend. Ahhhhhh, building a paycheck in The Time Of The End.

Anyway, . . .

"Like most Cuban cigars it has that prized complexity that changes several times during the course of a smoke."

That's it, folks. That is perfectly said. If you ever wonder why some people will get feisty or even worse, when someone pops off with a remark like I've smoked a few Cubans and they ain't that special, it's because if you've smoked ENOUGH Cubans, LONG enough in your life, you WILL change your mind. I know that everything is a matter of opinion, but if you are blessed enough to have smoked several dozen Cubans, many different brands, sizes and shapes, over a period of enough years, you will get it.

And WHAT you will get is that after a while you realize that most REAL Cubans really are well constructed, and really are that good. The world's most special cigars, and yes, simply the best. I personally have a big problem with most of them, even the "mild" ones, because I'm a big p_ssy when it comes to cigars, but the complexity, and delectable, intriguing nature of the flavors that can be found in a good Cuban are unmatchable. And most real Cuban cigars are good. Thanks to Cian for being able to say in such a perfect way, a thousand words worth of wisdom.

And as for Nixon, I remember him very well, too, and also the young Castro. I remember when American newscasters used to say his name in a way that made it sound like he was named after the family dog. They used to say "fidocastro" or at least that's the way it sounded when I was a little kid. Ahhhhhh, the days of Nixon, That Girl, Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the Olympics and the historymaking aftermath of that moment.

My youth, it's been gone a long time. And because I didn't get work tonight, that old African fable of Cian's will be reverberating even more loudly than it does every day.

I do know one thing. That small chocolate cheesecake that I bought from Junior's in Grand Central after getting out of work this morning? Since I was expecting to be leaving for work shortly, I'm calling that breakfast in a little while. And after that, I'm calling for two shots of the newly released seven year old Sazerac rye, which will become a younger stablemate to the fabled 18 year old. And after THAT, . . .

maybe even a cigar.

 :cop:

A glass of 40 yr old Port and a Partagas Luci. That is one of the all time great classic combo's.
Myself I had to settle for a Padron Churchill Maduro and several bottles of Sam Adams "Selections". That, of course, was after The Family had enjoyed a weenie roast in the driveway. I fired up the Chammia. We had dogs and brats cooked over an semi open fire, with cold beer to wash it down.

Beer & Brats with a Padron, yea thats about the same as 40 Y.O. Port & a Partagas , just depends on who you hang out with, I am happy with a cup of coffee & ONE peanutbutter cookie as long as some one brings a fine old Cuban Cigar ! hahaha Enjoy, Vince

That commercial that showed the guy keeping brats warm by putting them in a bath of beer and onions sure hit the nail on the head. I was getting things ready for Sunday night dinner and thought I would give the idea a try. I grilled a package of Brats and put them into the Bath. I used a couple of bottles of Guinnes and two large Vidaila Onions. When those onions got cooked soft they worked great on top of those brats. I have to give that reciepe a 10.

Damn....that sounds tasty....I love brats.

Vince...might be making the Q deck wed eve. I'll let you know.

Welllll it has been a very busy week here on the Sundaymorning Postings , I had to go back a few pages to find the thread ! lots od stuff on the websites that post here from battelrifels , Cigar.com & amback , & maybe some more that I dont know about, but then they could be right under my nose & I wouldnt see them ! , anyway it has been a strange week here in the Burgh , Warm, way warmer than it should be this time of the year, we are way below our snowfall average of 40 inches , getting a total of just over 20 inches of snow all season ! , we did get a lot of rain, the best thing about rain~~~ you dont have to shovel it !
But some of you guys & gals have never made a snow ball in your life, sad, very sad , for you , snow, it is great stuff, you can make a house out of it, make a fort, burry you buddys car with it ! , watch the bull in the field slip off the cows hahahaha , watch the little dog next door make 5 tracks in the snow ( If I need to explain that one STOP READING NOW!!!) hahahaha, when was the last time school was close because the weather was warm & sunny? hahaha, we get days off all the time in the winter, to much snow to get the kids to & from school with a safty warning out for bad roads , NO school, Yes I know it has been many years since I was in school, BUT I still feel like a kid, so I can relate ! we dont stop playing because we get old, we get old when we stop playing, & I am about 12 or 13 maybe on the maturity guise But I have ben getting Modern Maturity Magazine for a LONG ,LONG TIME .
well it is verrrrry early sunday morning , I was bussy last sunday morning & didnt get my post up till after noon, so Now I know I will be fine & I can sleep in & I will have my posting Done !!,
Saturday was a great day for me , I had a nice breakfast with my wife, we each had one egg , hahaha I remember when I didnt even get my fork out for less than 3 eggs , , time sure did change things here, all the money we save on food , now frees up more cash for cigars hahahahahaha 1 , but I digress, as usual, breakfast yes , one egg, with a little hot pepper cheese , & coffee , thats what i had I showered & got ready for the Saturday morning NPR Radio show, Click & clack the Tappet brothers, a call in show about cars & car repair, , they are from Cambridge ( our fair city ) Mass . two goof ball M.I.T. former students, ( I dont know if they finished ) but that show is a HOWEL, even my wife will listen to them ! , well I had a lunch set up with a few friends today & away I went, today was the Second Largest St. Pattys day Parade in the country, the only one bigger is the parade in NYC, Pittsburgh has its share of Irishmen , from all over the area everyone shows up Downtown for the parade, & there is a good bit of Guniess consumed as well as Bushmills & Jamison ( one is catholic & one is protestent , WHO CARES ) All whisky must be respected to some point ! , after it hits the belly, soon both will be filtered through the kidneys hahaha as well as the Guneiss , but who cares , as Ben Franklin said so equelenty, "Beer is proof that God loves us & wants us to be happy ! ", & happy was the throng of Irishmen in Da Burgh today as there are evey day, but today was the celebration & the Green beer flowed ! BURP !, I had a nice lunch of Ham & cabbage with a boiled potatoe or 2 & a weeee bit of whisky to wash it down with, Dont know what it was , but it was Irish Whisky for sure ( it was all they had hahahaha ) so a nice lunch a quick nap & off to New Castle Pa for more cigar buddys & our pod cast of Blowin Smoke this was #9 , check it out on line the shows run about an hour & are a lot of fun, I dont know the link to the pod cast, but if you go to the www.Burghhefers.com you can click on the link to the pod casts, there are other ways to get there but this is the way I do it , & I am not a computer nerd or geek, I am lucky to get my own Email & post some BS every now & then !
Since it is Sunday I will be cooking this afternoon, I dont know what it will be, I will pull some thing out of the freezer to defrost in the fridge over night when I am done posting here this weeee hours of the morning ! , the Kona will be ground about 8/8:30& breakfast is at 9 , if it is not raining I will grab my cup after breakfast & a Don Carlos III & take a walk, if it is raining , I will grab my coffee cup & a Don CarlosIII & go to the Qtr.Deck , no matter what happens , you can be sure of a DCIII & Kona on Sunday !
I had a buddy stop ove during the week & he Forgot to take the bottle of Johnny Walker BLUE that he brought with him back home, I didnt expect him to leave a bottle like that here, but he said No he didnt want to take it with him, so i grabbed a few sticks from the Cuban humidor & forced him to take a few with him, well it was a real treat for the guys who showed up later , , I let them LOOK & even smell it ! hahahaha , ahhh it was Grand ! to bad it is all gone all ready, I was going to see how long I could last watching it sit in the bottle & got to think well the angels got there share allready, so it was time for me to get my share hahaha, it didnt make it till sundown !
My Buddy mike is doing better, he is now in a nursing home in Beaver Pa , just about 10 miles away, a lot better than the 110 he was when he was in Erie, I didnt get to see him Saturday but I will get there on Monday , he gets a lot of company on Sundays so I dont go over , I am there when no one else can get there , like during the work day ! hahaha, dammm I love this Job ! hahahaha
he might be able to come home in a year or less if he continues to get better , Dammm I miss the old Mike !, the new Mike is great dont get me wrong I know nothing is forever, But he was only 54 when he had the stroke , Nothing I am not used to, My mother had a stroke when she was in her early 40's & lived almost 35 years after it , my daughter was just 5 months old when it happened & never got to know her grandmother like she was before the stroke, , the bad thing about Mike is I know all the fun & trouble we got into over the years , now all we can do is talk about it, cant go out & do all the stuff we did before , like playing William Tell with golf balls & 9 irons , ~~~~~~Dont Ask ! but it was fun ! , we cant do that any more , BUT we can talk about it, so thats better than looking at a stone with his name on it !!

we are having a cigar dinner on April 22 if you are thinking of being in the area get a hold of me for details !
& dont forget the http://www.cigarcrawl.com that is the third weekend in May , the bus is filling up dammmmm fast , once all the seats are sold Thats it ! cant take any more, check it out & get on the BUS !
it is getting way past my bed time, so I better get my formerly Fat @$$ off the computer & into the bed, who knows I might have a good time if I can wake up the wife hahahahaha ! Enjoy, Vince

Ok I posted this stuff & checked the links to see it work, well one didnt , but the second one did, so dont click on the burghherfers, it didnt work, but there is a link on the cigar crawl site & it did work ! , Dammmmm computer !

Wow vince - that's some post! You need to stop posting about food - all it does is make me hungry!

I agree with you about Click and Clack - one of the funniest shows on the air - radio OR TV. And Johnny blue? Damn - that's a tasty treat - too bad you're not a whisky fan at all - heh...

Glad to hear Mike is doing better - hopefully things will work out for the best and he'll be home even sooner.

My Sunday started off well - slept in (till 7) because the dog didn't wake up at her normal 6:30-I've-gotta-go-right-now time. So, got to sleep in through the thunder and hard rain - thought it was hail until I looked outside.

Brewing a pot of Kenya AA right now - we'll see if the smell drives the sleep from wife or not! We're going up to Moraine State Park today if the weather improves and then over to a friend's house for dinner if the weather improves. Will probably work a cigar or three into that schedule somewhere.

Ashton aged maduro torpedo

awesome....burned perfect.....creamy maduro....great aroma

well maybe the Tanzania Peaberry Ethiopia Yergacheffe mix had something to do with it

that sounds like a great blend, I will try that one some day , But today is Kona day here in da burgh , time for me to refill my mug, get the roast in the oven & see whats in the humidor for this afternoon's indulgence ! Enjoy, Vince

My Sunday afternoon/evening cigar, while watching the World Indoor Track and Field Championships, was a Magus Gran Magus (Churchill). This was a very slow burning, complex cigar, plenty of earth and spice, reminiscent of ginger and cinnamon, that I lit at 1628 hours. It drew with some difficulty through the first half, then loosened up some. It went out with about two inches left, then I relit it and finished it up at 1841 hours, a very, very long smoke for a Churchill, but quite satisfying, and I'm not getting ripped too badly off the kick, although I keep going back to spit.

I did have a few grand smokes today, I started with my
Don Carlos III early this morning, had my Last bahia trinadad corona later in the morning, I got out my pipe for the afternoon smoke, had a mix of balkin II that I added a little perique from New orleans , a pinch of Latakia & a little capt black gold to smooth it all out, not a bad mix at all. after supper I had a Padron Anniv.1926 torp. & now we are heading out for our Sunday night cigar ride & I think I will spark up my Opus X from the 2003 Smoke Across Americia , I think it is time to make an ash of that one !, I have a Mombatcho tripple legero for a back up ! , the coffee was Kona all day, dammmm great coffee,
A buddy called about 6 pm , he is leaving for Ireland in the morning , going to spread his wifes ashes where they met , only married 3 years but they were made for each other , they were married at half time at a Steeler game , both were football crazy, so now the healing will begin for him, I hope, he has been lost the last few weeks , it was a fast 3 years for them. no children , but a lot of great photos of a wonderfull life be it short together .
the last pot of kona is ready & I need to get out to the car to keep the Boss happy ! Enjoy, Vince
