From The Fishkill Freedom Press De Bloofy to Vince in Freedom, PA, and all across the land, GOOD MORNING AMERICA, HOW ARE YA!!! Just borrowing a line from that great old song, The City of New Orleans, written about one of the great old passenger trains.
I'm not normally a Sunday morning cigar smoker, but I do like these Conversations With Vince. I also like these conversations with all the folks all over the world who drop in to the forums at Your American Back Yard.
This morning I started out early by using up some Brazilian beans, a coffee I found a bit too mild and delving into a new pound of one of my all-time favorites, La Minita from Costa Rica. The first Freedom Press of the day was about 30% Brazilian, 70% La Minita, enough to give it some flavor and kick. I got an early start today, the laundry is already in the dryer, and I'm enjoying a wonderful cigar by Nick Perdomo.
The cigar is a robusto sized Cuban Heirloom, part of a sampler pack I bought two or three months ago. This is about the third one I've smoked and unlike some of Nick's other famous releases, they ALL have a beautiful draw, at least so far. It's a very smooth, medium bodied smoke, a very pleasing simple tasting cigar. I have a review posted here somewhere.
So, it sounds like Vince was up to his usual culinary expertise yesterday, and I did some cooking of my own too. Sometimes I get a hankering for linguine with garlic and oil, but in this case it was spaghetti because the linguine of the brand I like's hard to find. Now, I'm one of those guys who says there's no such thing as too much garlic. And I'm a big eater, so when I make this dish it's with one pound of pasta. And that's all for me. I always choose as many heads of garlic as will provide 50-60 medium or "average" sized cloves of garlic, about the size somewhere between a quarter and a nickel, I guess.
Last night I got right smack on 60 cloves of garlic, a new personal record. And of course the pasta came out perfect, and today I'm just brimming with garlic. It rises off my body when I sleep, it seeps out of my eyes, and I feel like Superman for two or three days. I also feel warmer than usual, and that's one reason why I really go for this dish in the winter. Because of my condition I need to keep warmer than others indoors, dress warmer for outdoors, etc. It really boosts my immune system and just TASTES SO GOOD!!!!
So, here it is Sunday morning, the first Freedom Press is almost gone, and it's so nice to be in your own house and do the laundry. To take my cigar, stop the All My Children tape, leave the couch, and walk over naked to the furnace room/laundry area, looking out the back window at the early morning sun across the landscape, the snow covered backyard, check the laundry, these are things I thank The Lord every day for.
The Cuban Heirloom robusto by Nick Perdomo is drawing well, time for another Freedom Press, this time 100% La Minita, then who knows what the day brings? The four or five inches of snow that fell yesterday all melted off the front steps and driveway, but the crust from previous storms is all still here in the yards. From what I can see though, it may be time to say goodbye to winter. Oh well, the lungs will open up with warmer weather and Sunday Morning cigars will be more prevalent.
There will be robins galore, and squirrels will multiply in the trees outside my windows. Spring will spring and there will be other things to wish for besides snow. And I'll have those pesky ants visiting me by the millions too. Time to order that citrus repellant stuff for the front porch, steps and perimeter of the house.
