I can remember going to the station with pop's,, standing on the hump in the back, asking every question under the sun. We pull in run over the little hose kuzi mentioned. The kid came out ask pop's what he needed. Dad says give me 3 gallon's of high test, and a pack of camels. You didnt have to specify back then, there was only one kind in those days. The kid checked the oil washed the windshield and asked if dad needed the tires checked. When it's time to pay pop hands the young man a dollar bill and gets a few pennies back.
Man those were the days. I just wonder to myself sometimes what that dollar meant to dad compared to today. A 10,,, 20.00 dollar bill.
Man I miss his wisdom.

Well it was a great Sunday afternoon in Old Virginia. All the kidds and grandchildren showed up for dinner. I did stuffed pork chops on the grill tonight. They wern't actually stuffed but WTF. I polished off the bottle of Bakers I had hidden in the garage frig then hit the lemonchella. It got pretty unstable after that. I broke out the RyL vejao churchills after dinner for the "Men" on the porch. Nr 1 grandson is spending the night. We had a bowl of popcorn ( not micro wave) and watched a couple of the boys showes. Him and grandma have hit the sack. I am writing this and I then I think I will pass out in my "Chair". All in all it was a great Sunday. Good Night Vince, Good night Bloofy.

I dont remember the horse drawn wagon but I do remember the milk man , come to think of it my little brother looks a little like him Hummmmmmm ! hahahaha

Glad to hear the event last week was great. Twoputts and I tried to make it to Vince's place, but figured we were too late after visiting with mom. Hope to make it for a visit next time twoputts is in town, probably sometime in June.
Take care and I am glad to hear you all survived.

What a way to start the day, Tanzanian Peaberry coffee & a Don Carlos #3 who said you must go to the grave in a good looking well preserved body, I am going to slide in side ways & proclaim , WHAT A RIDE !
Enjoy, Vince

I started the morning off with some Mayorga Blue Mountain coffee and a San Luis Rey cigar. Both were excellent. The only question I have (and I THINK I bought the cigar at King Beaver): I checked the the cigar with a ring guage and I swear it said it was a 56 ring but according to the list, they don't make a 56 ring. Sucker was FAT and I really liked it. Any ideas? Think migh "guage" might be faulty?

Hope everyone had a memorial Memorial Day! God Bless America!

Vince *IS* the king of King Beaver.....;-]

I have no idea what the ring of the cigar was , we have them in 58 & 60 ring, great smoke IMHO, as far as being King, No not me , I am just the chief cigar smoker , that is title enough, , Had I been named King , well Gerry would need to pay me a LOT more hahahaha
if you have any extra Blue mountain coffee , well bring a pound with you next trip to the Burgh hahaha

Good morning it is Sunday JUNE THIRD , 07 , dammmmmm June allready , seams like we were shoveling snow a short time ago, I know its Hot out as I have started to cary an extra hankey to wipe my face , the hat band on my straw hat has salt stains on it all ready ! The weather has been picture perfect , the grass is green the sky is blue , what more could you ask for , well maybe a BIG mug of Kona & a fine aged cigar from a little place about 90 miles from Key west , & thanks to a Buddy Sven from Sweden , I will be partaking in a classic this morning , a Punch Punch with the Kona, But I think the Kona might not stand up to the Punch so I might just hold off on the Punch till I make my second pot of the morning , Kenya AA ,brewed in the espresso pot , Nice & rich, strong & THICK, yea baby !!
well it has been a week of pins & needles the boss has had a Colinoscopy & a Biospsy of the breast, the colin exam was good & we will find out the breast exam Monday Morning at 8 :15 , there is no family history of any of my wifes Aunts having breast cancer, my Mother in law was the baby of 12 , 7 sisters & 5 brothers , all of the sisters including my Mother in law have or had Altzhimers , all the brothers had heart problems that led to there demise, my mother in law is the last of her family , she is in a verry nice Private facility , dammmmmm thing better be nice as they get her Social secuity , pention check from her job , & each one of the 3 kids kicks in an additional 250 a month now , so she is welll taken care of , she know who I am & who her Great Grandsons are, But always askes who is the nice lady that brings her grandsons to see her? well its your grandaughter & they are your great grandsons , Oh yea thats right she will say & in the next breath ask where Kendra is , ( her grand daughter ) , Oh well she had a great life if she only could remember it .

I stopped at the new bakery a few doors up the street from the cigar shop & had a canolli & a cup of coffee, Not bad for a mass production made pastry , one of our regular cigarcustomers got a dozen , ate 9 of them & said since he didnt go into sugar shock he didnt have diabetis , I told him to get to a Doc & have a test to be sure dammmm fool , its nothing to joke about , , it killed my father & had a good grip on me till I took off the 202 pounds , now I dont inject anything watch my diet & thats it , no Meds for the Diabetis at all ! , it did leave me with some damage, the left eye is about shot & I still have a bit of neuropithy in the feet & hands , the cold weather really gets to the fingers & toes . BUT I am srill here kicking @$$ & taking Names ! well lets get back to the bakery, I picked up a small loaf of the bread, it was good but not outstanding, I sliced it last night & let it sit out to get stale , it made great French toast this morning ! , that reminds me to get more vannilla extract .
we got the NEW limited addition of the Romeo & Julitta in the fancy dressed up boxes with the foam dividers between each tubed cigar , the presentation is fantastic & the cigar is wonderful, , the cost is CRAZY HIGH MSRP is almost 20 bucks for the robusto , the churchill & the torp are over the 20 line , when I start paying that much for a smoke I better be getting a drink, Supper , & breakfast & what comes in between for that kind of scratch , LOL
My wife & I are still going for our Cigar rides on Saturday evenings , even witht he gas at 3.09 a gallon , I figure it is the best time for us to sprnd any time together with out the grandkids or the phone ringing ( NO cell phone for me ) you want me , call me at home or at work, if I am not there leave a message on the machine, I will (maybe ) get back to you in a timley fashion, depends on my mood ! hahahahaha , well I took 3 cigars & off we went , looking for the old Idora Park, an amusment park in Youngstown Ohio that we both have great childhood memorys , well the pak had a major fire about 12 years ago & it is now just a Big over grown field , fenced in & NOTHING going on inside the fence, all the rides & buildings are gone , just weeds growning , an other childhood good time all gone, cant share it with the grandsons as it is GONE, well I was down to my last cigar ( with me ) & figured it was a good time to stop at Plaza Books in Boardman Ohio for some Coffee & restock the 3 finger in my left chest pocket, , thankfully they were open & I went in the regulars were all up front watching the Tube & I was looking for some thing I didnt have , some off the wall brand or a shop brand , just to try some thing different, well I did pick up a shop brand Torp & was just looking for the 1926 ammiv. just to compair prices hahahaha , well the lady who is working asks me if I am friends with Mike Hervatine , , well this floors me , here I am about 50/60 miles from home & this lady askes me if I know this guy who just happens to be the Mikey I always talk about here, he had a stroke in the O.R. when he was having a new valve put in his heart , he & I have been friends for over 20 years , now How did this lady know Mike? she is married to his nephew , Now I have only met her 2 other times & I dont remember her at all but she rememberd me , mabe it was the cigar, the beard or the voice, maybe all 3 tied up in one cute package hahahahaha , I will be calling mike soon, he should be home from church about 1 Pm . , seams like I cant go anyplace
so on the way home I stop for Gas (3.04 ) & it is a pre pay pump , as I go in one og the kids who works at the cigar shop for me is comming out , dammmmm good thing I had my wife & not my Girllfriend with me I would have been caught TWICE on the same night ! hahaha

I have a nice purple egg plant to grill this afternoon with a Ribeye , I will be putting Barbs on a few minutes from Now & put mine of at 5 to 4 we will eat at 4 hahahaha , she wants her beef cooked , I just want mine warm! MOOOOOOOOO
yesterdas scoccor game was a lot of fun, they had just enough kids to field a team , no bench players this week & Jonas had to play the entire game, dammmm he was a ball of stink after the game , he had a great centering pass thatwent for a score 7 he took 2 shots him self, one hit the cross bar & the golie caught the other one, I have no idea what the score was or who won , the kids know , so they are happy ! And isnt that waht its all about, making the rug rats happy? I was a happy child, still am , hahaha Happy & a child ! Just now I have a drivers licence & an allowed by law to buy my own whisky , dont need an adult to get it for me hahahahah.
I will be fireing up a Zino classic #6 some time today , maybe tonight after the Punch , I havent had one of them yet but toiday seams like a good day for a fine smoke, well I will determine how fine some time today, , it is time fo r me to get back to the kitchen & thing about what i amn going to do with the beef today, dry rub/ marinade, BBQ? , DEEP FRY ??? hahahahaha
Enjoy, Vince

Ahh yes... Idora Park. I remember going there every year as a kid. My father worked at the Lordstown General Motors plant and they had their company outing there every summer. I miss the jackrabbit, wildcat, rock-o-plane, and caterpillar the most. The rides all closed down sometime in the early 80s I think. By the time I graduated in '85 all they did at the park was an ocassional carshow or huge clearance sale of some sort in the ballroom. I recall something going on w/the owners being sued by the city because they never bothered to clean it up.

Did you happen to drive through Mill Creek Park while you were there? I used to take my Great Dane there almost daily. I would let him run in the field that's right across the street from Idora Park. Man what a sad sight that place was by the time I moved out here in '05 but it sure has left me with some great childhood memories.

Plaza Books in Boardman... lol. I graduated from Boardman High and Plaza books was also a regular stop for me before I moved out here. Man Vince, you sure do have me feeling homesick all of a sudden. It was great reading your post.

EDIT: If I ever decide to go back to Youngstown for a visit I'm going to have to look you up. Pittsburgh was where we always went for concerts, football games, or just to hang out. There wasn't much to do in the Youngstown area so Pittsburgh was the place to be.

Sure we drove through the park but it was raining & we didnt get out of the car, nice looking park, , I didnt mean to make you home sick but it happens !
My family all worked at Armco steel in Ambridge & the company/union picnic was at Idora all the time, I had my first LEAGLE beer with my Dad at the beer hall at Idora , the ball room was fantastic, I loved going to it, I am about 20/25 Miles from da burgh in New Sewickley Twp between Freedom & Cranberry , if you know the area .
it is a shame what happened to Idora , Kennywood park is just to big & busy for me , but not as bad as Disneyland in Calif. , I havent gone to Disney world in Fla. & have desire to go there , My in laws took my daughter there when she was 10 , if she wants to take her kids there , thats fine with me But I just dont want the hassle of going that far to stand in a line all day . be sure to give me a call when you get back home to Boardman , I will do my best to come over or you can stop here anytime you want, the coffee is on, the scotch is a single malt & the cigars are 70F & 70% humidity ! Enjoy, Vince

Summer has finally come to the frozen north. My father in law died on Friday, he was 87 last week he asked my wife how old he was and when she said 87 his response was “holy fu*%”. We have had tons of relatives at the house and a lot of them smoke cigars so it has been a good few days of smoking and drinking on the deck and having lots of laughs at “Dad’s” one liners and a few tears as well. I wish I could last as long as he did and still have a sense of humour and remain happy until the end. Vince everyone read your Sunday morning article and we all agree you are one fine gentleman. I look forward someday to meeting you and having a cigar on the quarter deck (I think it will be a special cigar).

My Sympanathy & condoleneces about your Father in law , 87 is GREAT life with a sence of humor thats top shelf, I remember when My Father in law died , I was working at 1460 WMBA with a morning talk show, well I have been throwing Jabs at him for my entire married life & when I got on the radio I still did it now on the air, well , deep down in side he loved it he would get a little cranky at time s but you could tell he reveled in his celeberity , when his buddys would kid him , Howard we heard what that fat @$$ son in law siad about you this morning , Yea I know I heard him, well it was a lot of FUN, well after he passed away I kept it up, no reason to stop , I took a pool on the air, the only people who we allowed to call in were his New Niebhors at the cemitary & they all voted to have him evicted , he snored all the time , & when he wasnt snoring he was a grumpy old bear, ( he even had a 7 dwarfs t shirt & hat that said Grumpy on it ) well some of the listeners thought I was way out of line untill my mother in law called & said she agreed with his new niebhors but she didnt want him back ! hahahaha , well that call put everything Ok wiuth the listeners & no one ever said anything about it again, he had a sence of humor & even in death we were able to tap into his
" Pain in the @$$ way of life ", the Qtr.deck is always open for a smoke so stop anytime ! Enjoy, Vince

golfcigarjunkie - my condolences as well, but it's great to hear he had such a keen sense of humor. I like how Vince summed things up w/his father in law. It's great they had that kind of relationship
I had a good friend from Pittsburgh die of a sudden heart attack at 38 while on vacation in Europe with another friend of mine. While we mourned, his funeral day was not a day of sadness. We partied and celebrated the great life he had and how he enriched ours. Friends from all over the country and Canada as well came to his funeral. That's how he would have wanted it and it was great to be a part of it. "A celebration of the life of".

Vince - I will DEFINITELY hook up with you when I get around to visiting back home (although I have no plans to do it anytime soon). I would like to visit Pittsburgh again and maybe even stop by the cigar shop. There's not much to do in Youngstown so I'd much rather come your way. I'm familiar with Cranberry as well, I used to get my supplies from Woodworker's Supply out that way. I look forward to us meeting sometime in the future.

I read posts like today's and I think to myself, where would the world be without Vince? I have been exchanging packages with him for seven years, just missed a couple phone calls from him, and can well attest, through my own experience and of those I've met who do know him personally, Vince is a king among men. I count my life way richer from reading him and knowing him as I do, albeit not yet personally. Anyone who does get to meet him is in for an even better time.

Golfcigarjunkie, my thoughts and prayers regarding your loss.

Speaking of cigars, Vince, did you say the Non-Cuban RyJ has a cigar out that's MSRP of $20 for a ROBUSTO?!?!?!?!!

Let's see, I like the regular line, the vintage line is okay, and I think I'll stick with those, if any. Wow. Everyone's trying to cash in on Opus X-mania, I guess. Foam dividers, ooooooh, hee, hee, heee!!!

Also speaking of things that ain't what they used to be, in the whole process of settling in to my new apartment, I have been organizing and labeling various items of paperwork including all kinds of old photos, from those of me as a baby to pictures of me with my father in a 1998 visit to the farm.

One set I found was my mother, sister and me standing on The Boardwalk in Atlantic City. There is a banner clearly visible in the picture behind us commemorating the 100th anniversary of the boardwalk. It also says 1970. That's before the whole picture changed and the casinos went in. I've never seen the "new look" and I don't want to. I showed the pictures to a friend of mine who did say that he thinks a piece of the boardwalk area does look like the pictures. Yeah, a piece, how long, about ten feet?

Coney Island is also going the way of all living, so after 45 years or so, another Great American Theme Place is going to change in favor of "progress and development." Okay, I'll have the $20 hamburger and the $8 beer, please, extra ketchup. Oh, that's $2.50 extra, ahhhhh, what the heck, give it to me.

Vince, you've done it again, as you always do. I'm pretty sick now, my annual early June, poor/changing air quality sickness, plenty of pain, stiffness, fatigue, cranial pressure, aches and for the past three days, slight fever and gobs of phlegm. Vince, you helped relieve some of it.

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Knock the horns off and whip its ass, my foot. Make mine medium.

My condolences to you Don. It may sound strange but it sounds like you had a decent time sitting around remembering your Father in Law.

I certainly hope that when my day comes that my family and friends don't mope over me. I'd rather they had a rowdy celebration of my life as opposed to a sorrowful remembrance. Celebrate the times we spent together, not the time we are going to temporarily spend apart.

Vince, that tale about your Father in law had my choking on my pepsi. Funny stuff. Thanks again for a great Sunday read. By the way, I plan on visiting your shop someday.

Have a great week everybody.
