What Did You Smoke Today

Today I tried something a little different. A while back, I was given a handful of Dutch Masters panatelas. I read somewhere on an earlier post that one should leave cigars in their cellophane in the humidor and that the RH would somehow get to them. I don't think so.

Yeah, I know they're machine made (or at least I think so) but I don't like to throw anything away so I kept them in my humi in their cello.

Tonight, I had a little time before dinner and I also had a La Gloria Cubano robusto that I had yet to try. My plan was to smoke a Dutch Master panatela before dinner and the La Gloria Cubano afterwards with a snifter of Bakers and a rich French Roast coffee.

If you've read any of Senor Bloofington's posts under "Wine & Spirits" you've probably seen his "Top 25" list. Bakers is on that list, and for good reason. It's excellent.

Anyway, the Dutch Master smoked rather quickly...because it was too dry, I think. I'll remove all the cellos now. It wasn't too bad for a machine-made cigar, but it sorta made me think I was smoking an incense stick.

The La Gloria Cubano was smooth, mild, and a pretty decent smoke. It had a slightly uneven burn in the last couple inches but otherwise not too bad.

These new cigars I'm trying were in a sampler I got for Father's Day and I'm beginning to wonder if Thompson Cigars chose them all because they were mild or possibly mild-to-medium. I e-mailed them to ask the specifics of each cigar in the sampler but was told that they couldn't possibly tell me because not all of those samplers were comprised of the same cigars.

Maybe I'm ready to try a heavier-bodied cigar. I was gonna order some Macanudos but I think they're fairly mild, also. Another thing I haven't yet tried is a cigar with a candela (0r double claro or AMS) wrapper but I read somewhere that candela is mild, too.

The guy I spoke to at thompson Cigars when my wife and I visited Tampa (from California) in early June told me that candela was an acquired taste and that I probably wouldn't like them. "Course, that coulda been because he said he didn't carry them anymore. I also got the impression from him that I was out of my class even being in his store based on what I was looking for. Sorta like, "If you have to ask the price, you can't afford these".

Anyway, if anyone can suggest a good medium-bodied cigar, I'd like to try some.

Didn't mean to write a book, here. Just wanted to let you know what I smoked today.

Regards,

Marty

It was not cause of the Cello. Cello will breathe moisture. It is not air tight. if that was the case you would not need a humidor at all, just leave them in Cello. I am guessing they were dry to start with, it did not happen in your humidor.

In between a couple of cuban cigars, I had a Romeo y Julieta Belicosa. It was a great cigar. Mild to Medium - nice flavors - burned great on the golf course (oops, I mean open air meeting.) I got it from my buddy who I was golfing with and lit it even though I didn't think I would like it. How wrong I was - will definitely be picking these up after my OBX excursion with the Yuma Bomber. I have to save some cash because Chris will be borrowing from me to get his 3 mani-pedis while we are there.

Last night I had an Augusto Reyes. Not too bad. Mild, smooth. I think it was about 5 1/2 x about a 46 ring. ...only rated at a 7.

I've got some Macanudo Maduros on order as well as some Astral Phoenix churchills. Haven't tasted either of them yet. Anyone got any opinions on either of them?

Hey Colonel - how was that Partagas 898? I like the RA 898's, but haven't smoked the Partagas I have in my humidor.

Marty, as you are learning about this and finding out what you like, I think its great that you are smoking a wide variety of cigars. You may find that you like the Astral. There is only one way to find out and that is to smoke one.

One of the worst smokes I ever had was a Tatuaje red label. But the next guy loves them.

Well, the Astrals may have been a mistake but I'll have to see when they get here. As for tonight, I'm planning to smoke a panatela I bought at the Conch Republic Cigar Factory in Key West, Fla. when my wife and I were there in early June.

I picked up a handful of 'em while I was there. They're pretty good - - IMHO. I got a couple maduros and a few naturals. Neat little place there in Key West. Fun trip.

Well, tonight I smoked that panatela from the Conch Republic Cigar Factory that I mentioned in my last post and I've gotta say it was quite good. Smooth, mild, flavorful. I'd give it a strong 8 in my rating. And it was fun watching the gal roll 'em.

Speaking of trying different cigars, I wonder if anyone can help me find something I've been looking for. I live about 50+ miles from the nearest cigar store so I've been doing my looking online without much success. What I'm after is a 5-pack of a relatively good cigar, preferably a churchill, a lonsdale, or something similar with a candela wrapper. I prefer the longer cigars...the short, fat ones don't really turn me on.

The closest I've found is at JR Cigars but they only have them in bundles of 20 in their "JR Alternatives". I was told by that jerk at Thompson Cigars in Tampa when I was there that "candela is an acquired taste and you probably won't like it". I'd like to find that out for myself but I'd rather not have to buy 20 of them only to find out that he was right, after all.

Does anybody know of an online source where I might find a 5-pack of 'em? I'd sure appreciate hearing from you if you do.

Thanks muchly,

Marty

Marty,

cigarbid.com sells tons of five packs. You might check there but I don't recall ever seeing any candelas.

I bought a couple of A. Fuente candelas back in December and haven't tried on yet. I may torch one in a few days to see how I like them.

Also Marty, cigarsinternational.com sells candelas and if I'm not mistaken, they should offer 5-pks.

Thanks for the info. CigarBid is where I bought those Astrals I mentioned in an earlier post and Cigars International shows a dozen different brands with candela wrappers but only offer them in full boxes.

Those are only a couple websites I've visited looking for some 'greenies' but I'm sure there are a lot I don't yet know about.

Thanks again.

Marty

Marty, let me look through the humidor and see what I have. I remember a few boxes of Camacho Candela's I got a few years back. I never opened the boxes, and I don't remember getting rid of them.

Gee, thanks, Capt. If you find some maybe I could buy a few from you for tasting purposes.

Incidentally, I think I noticed that you're in Michigan - is that correct? I grew up in Detroit but left there in '56 to move here to sunny (smoky?) California. I sure don't miss those winters back there.

Thanks again,

Marty

Yes Marti, I hail from Michigan, Oakland County. When I get home from work I will look and see what I have. I do know for a fact I have a few LaGloria Cubana Candela's in a desktop, I just came across them. PM me your addy, and I will try to get then out the end of the week.

I had a La Riqueza, the new Pete Johnson cigar today. Very nice.

I followed that up with the Camacho Liberty 2008. It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure I like this year's even more than last year's version.

At that point, I was going to leave, but my buddy that was there asked if I wanted a Tatuaje Black. I love that cigar.

This was much better than working today.
