Today I tried something a little different. A while back, I was given a handful of Dutch Masters panatelas. I read somewhere on an earlier post that one should leave cigars in their cellophane in the humidor and that the RH would somehow get to them. I don't think so.
Yeah, I know they're machine made (or at least I think so) but I don't like to throw anything away so I kept them in my humi in their cello.
Tonight, I had a little time before dinner and I also had a La Gloria Cubano robusto that I had yet to try. My plan was to smoke a Dutch Master panatela before dinner and the La Gloria Cubano afterwards with a snifter of Bakers and a rich French Roast coffee.
If you've read any of Senor Bloofington's posts under "Wine & Spirits" you've probably seen his "Top 25" list. Bakers is on that list, and for good reason. It's excellent.
Anyway, the Dutch Master smoked rather quickly...because it was too dry, I think. I'll remove all the cellos now. It wasn't too bad for a machine-made cigar, but it sorta made me think I was smoking an incense stick.
The La Gloria Cubano was smooth, mild, and a pretty decent smoke. It had a slightly uneven burn in the last couple inches but otherwise not too bad.
These new cigars I'm trying were in a sampler I got for Father's Day and I'm beginning to wonder if Thompson Cigars chose them all because they were mild or possibly mild-to-medium. I e-mailed them to ask the specifics of each cigar in the sampler but was told that they couldn't possibly tell me because not all of those samplers were comprised of the same cigars.
Maybe I'm ready to try a heavier-bodied cigar. I was gonna order some Macanudos but I think they're fairly mild, also. Another thing I haven't yet tried is a cigar with a candela (0r double claro or AMS) wrapper but I read somewhere that candela is mild, too.
The guy I spoke to at thompson Cigars when my wife and I visited Tampa (from California) in early June told me that candela was an acquired taste and that I probably wouldn't like them. "Course, that coulda been because he said he didn't carry them anymore. I also got the impression from him that I was out of my class even being in his store based on what I was looking for. Sorta like, "If you have to ask the price, you can't afford these".
Anyway, if anyone can suggest a good medium-bodied cigar, I'd like to try some.
Didn't mean to write a book, here. Just wanted to let you know what I smoked today.
Regards,
Marty
